What Is Meant to be a Hero?

In the past thousand years of human existence, there are a lot of historical events that had happened in
this nation. In most cases, we remember those significant people who made the great impact to this
country and call them Heroes. There are heroes that are known to their acts, successful projects,
political propagandas, and other prominent accomplishments. Some of them became famous and was
written on historical books, displayed their works on Museum and some of them became a remarkable
face to us that even their name lived in our memory.

However, it always leads us to a question, “What is meant to be Hero?”. On my own perspective, there
are no best considerations on being a Hero. A simple act can be a change to this mourning world who
needs a true Hero. A Hero whose heart is gold, a heart that is sincere enough to lend a helping hand and
a heart with a fruitful works. It starts with me and it starts with you.

A song once said with this lyric; “Walang sinuman ang nabubuhay para sa sarili lamang. Walang
sinuman ang namamatay para sa sarili lamang. Tayong lahat ay may pananagutan sa isa't isa.” –
Pananagutan by Jaime Rivera. We all live to look on each other, that is why we have a big role and a
purposeful life here in this world. Thus, a true meaning of Hero for me, is someone who genuinely offers
help and look for someone’s situation even at its simplest form.

And today, as we celebrate our National Heroes Day. We look up to our modern Heroes, the front liners.
Doctors, Nurses, Medical Technologists, Radiologists and all of health workers, drivers, delivery staffs,
vendors, cook, volunteers, policemen, soldier and other people who serve and risks their lives just to
lend a helping hand in this war. This made me visualize how people can show that there is a true Hero
that lies inside of us. That no one cannot be one.

You can be a Hero in any way, and so am I. One step, one moment and just a simple act to help someone
makes you a Hero. Indeed, everyone can unify to lift each other just like the signature “Bayanihan”
picture of the Filipinos, which you can visualize as a Nipa-hut being lifted by people to move for
relocation. Imagine a nation full of people with a heart of a true Hero.
