Periodic trends worksheet

Name: Carlos Watson Date: 10/16

1. The most reactive metals are located in group 2

2. The most reactive nonmetals are located in group 7
3. Why are the noble gases nonreactive?
That's because they have eight valence electrons, which fill their outer energy level.
4. Identify each element as metal, metalloid, or nonmetal.
a. Fluorine Nonmetal
b. Germanium metalloid
c. Zinc metal
d. Phosphorus non metal
5. Give two examples of elements for each category.
a. Noble Gases helium (He), neon (Ne)
b. Halogens fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl)
c. Alkali Metals potassium (K), rubidium (Rb)
d. Alkaline Earth Metals strontium (Sr), barium (Ba)

6 The trend to smaller atoms across a period is caused by the increasing positive charge of the nucleus.
7. In general, the atomic radii of the main block [groups 1, 2, 13-18] elements sublevel down a group.
8. What trend in atomic radius do you see as you go across a period on the periodic table? What causes the Trend?
As you move across a period, first ionization energy increases. WHY? - As you move across a period, the atomic
radius decreases, that is, the atom is smaller. The outer electrons are closer to the nucleus and more strongly attracted
to the center.

9. What trend in atomic radius do you see as you go down a group on the periodic table? What causes this
Trend?

10.. Which atom has the smallest atomic radius: circle the correct answer
a. Al or B b. Na or Al c. S or O d. O or F e. Br o r Cl f. Mg or Ca

11. Put each group in order from smallest to largest atomic radius:
a. Mg, Sr, Be, Ra b. I, Sr, Y, Cd c. Fe, V, Ca, Ni d. Br, Cu, F, Sc
Sr be ra mg y I cd sr ca ni v fe br f sc f

12. For each of the following sets of atoms, rank the atoms from smallest to largest atomic radius.
a. Li, C, F F C Li
b. Li, Na, K Na K li
c. Ge, P, O O ge o
d. C, N, Al Al N C
13. Define Ionization Energy.
In physics and chemistry, ionization energy or ionization energy, is the minimum amount of energy required to
remove the most loosely bound electron of an isolated neutral gaseous atom or molecule.

14. For each group of elements, choose the element that has the highest ionization energy:
Xe, Rn, Kr, Ar b. Co, Fe, Zn, K c. Er, Dy, Sm, Gd d. K, Li, Rb, Cs

15. For each of the following sets of atoms, rank them from lowest to highest ionization energy.
a. Mg, Si, S Mg S si
b. Mg, Ca, Ba Mg ca ba
c. F, Cl, Br Br F Cl
d. Ba, Cu, Ne Ba Ne cu
