DANZIG, POLAND, I September 1939: The German blir:krieg began its thrust
into Poland early on I Septemberas the Germansattackedkey points in the city of
Danzig. beginning with the shelling of the Westerplattegarrison. In another part of
the city, 100 VGAD (Reinforced Border SurveillanceService,or Verstiirker-Gren:-
At(sichts-Dicnsl. made up of nrostly Sturnubrcilung (SA) men, the "Brownshirts")
and Police troops began to attack the Post Office. The Gdansk-l Post Office was a
sturdy building the Poles had further strengthened.and it was garrisonedby ex-Pol-
ish Army reserveofficers that had been ordered by Marshal Ridz-Smigly to hold

their guns in the cobblestonedstreetand trained their sights on the Post Office only
60 metersdistant,and beganto open fire.
