Reading Activity. A brave woman

Read the following text and say if the statements are true or false.

A brave woman

Porfirio Diaz, ruler of Mexico for 30 years at the end of the 19th century, he's
remembered more as a dictator than as a Statesman. His censorship and
disregard for freedom of speech resulted In the production of many clandestine
newspapers all over Mexico.
With his permission however one woman managed to write and publish the
following in her journal:
“Those of us who in our souls, wish for our nation's greatness, those who
treasure in our hearts the love of a daughter cannot renounce the hope of seeing
the conquest of Liberty for women...”
Loreana Wright de Kleinhans was among the first Mexican woman writers to
express the need for women to be educated and to make their voices heard.She
wrote several papers on women's issues, including a biography of Mexican
woman entitled Mujeres Notables Mexicanas.Segments of the book appeared between 1887 and 1889 in Las
violetas del Anahuac, the journey she headed as literary director.
At that time Mexico was behind of the feminist agenda. Many women read La Semana De Las Mananitas
Mexicanas (1851), a journal dedicated to the instruction of women on how to be an angel at home and in
public. Interesting Lee La Semana de las Senoritas Mexicanas was written by men and not by women.
Las violetas de Anahuac, in contrast,included historical writings .The purpose of the journal was to educate
Mexican women on more than just how to behave. And critics, loriana and her group of woman writers were
not afraid to voice their opinions.

And who was Laureeana Wright de Kleinhans?


Her father what's an American Santiago Wright, her mother a Mexican woman named Eulalia Gonzalez.She
learned French and English with private tutors in Mexico City. Later, she married Sebastian Kleinhans and
devoted her life to writing.
Today she's considered to be one of the first women to talk about women's rights in Mexico.
She defended the education of girls and promoted equality between men and women.

She was a great journalist and a brave woman.
