a. A consonant is a basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed by
the lips or the teeth. Examples: f, t, s, m, etc.
b. A syllable is a single sound or unit of pronunciation having vowel sound alone, with or
without consonants (preceding or following) forming the whole or a part of a word.
Examples: There are two syllables in father and three in internet.
c. A compound sentence is composed of two or more main / independent clauses joined
by coordinating conjunctions like for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon /a comma.

g. An adverb phrase is simply one more words that act as an adverb. It can modify a verb,
adverb, or adjective and can tell “how”, “where”, “why”, or “when.” Example: He stood on
this bench.
h. A noun clause is a dependent clause that functions as a noun. Noun clauses can act
as a subject, object, or complement or an object of a preposition within a sentence. A
noun clause usually begins with words such as how, that, what, whatever, when, where,
whether, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, and why. Examples: I
like what I see. Whoever leaves last should turn off the lights.
