Special Topic in Linguistics Course Description
Course Objectives: The course is designed to offer students an insight into some current
developments in the study of natural language and verbal communication. We will discuss
some issues related to the relation of language to information value and ideology. We will
focus on recent trends in discourse semantics such as critical discourse analysis, multi –
modal discourse analysis and cognitive linguistics. The course offers students plenty of
opportunity to practice critical reading, thinking, and logical reasoning, and to improve
their ability to construct arguments and evaluate arguments (or non-arguments)
constructed by others.
1. Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs) By the end of the course, the students
will be able to: 1. acquire basic theoretical competences in the assigned theories and basic
skills related to research. 2. to read studies in critical discourse analysis and multi-modality,
3. compile different types of research data: visual and non-visual, 4. do a qualitative and
quantative analysis of their data.
