ABSTRACT

This thesis presents a part of the results of an ongoing laboratory work carried
out to design the compressive strength of concrete made with fly ash and pozzolans as
the admixture and substitute for cement. The strength variations of concrete depend
upon the influence of fine aggregates, coarse aggregates, fly ash and pozzolans. The
concrete ingredients are cement, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates, water, fly ash and
pozzolans.
Cement used in this test is SCG (ASTMC-150 type I cement). Sand from
Pyin-Bon-Gyi Village, Bago Division and aggregates from Taung-Villa Village,
Mandalay Division are used for the study Fly ash from Ti Kyit Coal Industry, Shan
State and Pozzolans from Poppa Mountain, Kyauk-Padaung Township are used.
Purified water is used to increase the strength of the concrete. The water cement ratio
0.5 is used in this research.
The study specializes the compressive strength and slump tests for three
cement ratios such as 1:2:4, 1:1½:3 and 1:3:6.The specimens such as cement 100%
cement, 80% cement and 20% fly ash, 70% cement and 30% fly ash, 80% cement and
20% pozzolan and 70% cement and 30% pozzolan are tested. These specimens are
casted and cured in water for 7 days and 28 days at the temperature between 27 .C and
30.C. In slump test, the slump thickness varies from the minimum 0.2 inch to the
maximum 0.6 inch for all concrete. The compressive strength of 1:1½:3 concrete
using fly ash 20% and 80% cement is better than that of other concrete. In this study,
target mean strength is 15 MPa and above for 7 days.
