MILESTONE 2 (STAGE 1) – REFINED PROBLEM
STATEMENT FOR A WIND TURBINE
Team Number: Mon-52
The Title of The Assigned Engineering Scenario
Pioneer of Clean Energy

Write the Initial Problem Statement Below

→ This is a copy-and-paste submission of what you submitted for Milestone 1
Design a wind turbine that produces electricity for a small town in order to eliminate use
of environmentally harmful substitutes.

Finalized Objective Tree of Wind Turbine for Your Assigned Engineering Scenario
→ Please have a copy of your finalized team objective tree of wind turbine for your
assigned engineering scenario.

Refined Problem Statement:

→ Write the refined problem statement for the design of wind turbine based on your
assigned scenario.
Design wind turbines for the Swedish Wind Energy Association to be used in a wind farms
that provide power to multiple cities through converting wind energy into electricity to
reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

MILESTONE 2 (STAGE 2) – DESIGN REQUIREMENTS FOR A
TURBINE BLADE
Team Number: Mon-52

Turbine Blade Problem Statement:

→ Write a complete problem statement for the design of turbine blade based on your assigned
engineering scenario.
Design a long-lasting turbine blade using high quality, lightweight materials that can provide
energy to multiple cities.

Objective Tree of turbine blade for assigned engineering Scenario

your assigned engineering scenario.

MILESTONE 2 (STAGE 3) – SELECTION OF TOP

OBJECTIVES FOR A TURBINE BLADE
4 Project-1
Team Number: Mon-52

List the top three objectives of a turbine blade for your assigned engineering
scenario
1: Environmentally Friendly
2: Maximize Energy Output
3: Minimizing Cost

Include a rationale for selecting each of these objectives

→ Write maximum 100 words for each objective
Objective 1: Environmentally Friendly
Rationale: Sweden’s goal is reduced net greenhouse gases to zero this means reducing the
carbon footprint required to build and maintain the blade so it is still able to be produced in
the future without the production process leaving a substantial carbon footprint. Using
methods and materials that reduce the reduce the carbon footprint require to build the
blade.

Objective 2: Maximize Energy Output

Rationale: The wind turbine is required to produce large amounts of energy to provide power
to multiple cities in Sweden. In order to increase energy output, the length of the turbine
blade must be longer so the swept area of the is increased. This allows for the blades to
extract more energy from the wind, producing more power.

Objective 3: Minimizing Cost

Rationale: One of the goals of the wind turbine is to create a sustainable structure that will
minimize cost in the long term. The wind turbine blade should be made of high quality and
long-lasting materials in order to reduce the cost of maintenance after the structure is built.

MILESTONE 2 (STAGE 4) – METRICS
Team Number: Mon-52

For your selected top three objectives fill out the table below with associated metrics (including
units) for each objective.
Objective 1: Environmentally friendly

Unit/Metric: Metric: The six types of greenhouse gases in kg to measure the size of
carbon footprint required to build turbine blade. The bigger the number
the bigger the footprint.

• Range of 0% (Worst), to 100% (Best)

Units: CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) kg.

• 0-250 CO2e kg: 100%

• 251-1000 CO2e kg: 75%
• 1001-5000 CO2e kg: 50%
• 5001- 15 000 CO2e kg:25%
• >15 000 CO2e kg: 0%

Objective 2: Maximize Energy Output

Unit/Metric: Metric: Estimate the power wind turbine produce, the greater the power,
the more energy is output.

• Range of 0% (Worst), to 100% (Best)

Units: Million watts (MW)/year
• >6 MW/year: 100%
• 6 MW-5MW: 75%

6 Project-1
• 5MW-3MW: 50%
• 3MW-2MW: 25%
• <2MW:0%

Objective 3: Minimize Cost

Unit/Metric: Metric: The estimated cost to build one turbine blade.

• Range of 0% (Worst), to 100% (Best)

Units: Canadian Dollars ($)
• <$200 000: 100%
• $200 001–$225 000: 75%
• $225 001-$250 000: 50%
• $250 001-$300 000: 25%
• >$300 000: 0%
