Wish statements and the unreal past.

Wish + (that) + past simple


We can use 'wish' to talk about something that we would like to be different in
the present or the future. It's used for things which are impossible or very
unlikely.
We use the past tense to talk about wishes in the present. This is the unreal
past.
I wish I had warmer clothes.
She wishes he liked her.
He wishes he were taller. (ALWAYS use were)
He’s tired of the winter (Reality)
He wishes he lived in a hotter country.
He wishes it were summer.
He wishes winter weren’t as cold.

Because we con use “wish” in a conversation for to talk about something that
we would like to be different in the present o the future.
