Downloading uTorrent Client


Click this link to start downloading uTorrent client. Save it on your desktop and run it.

Installing uTorrent Client

You will see a series of standard software installation dialogs like the one below. There is nothing
exceptional there just keep pressing Next button (at the last step it will turn into Finish button) and
installation will complete.

Configuring uTorrent
After installer finishes copying files, it will run uTorrent automatically and you will see initial setup
screen.
This is the uTorrent SpeedGuide which will help you optimize uTorrent settings for your internet
connection. If SpeedGuide did not appear, please run it manually from Options -> SpeedGuide menu.

In the Connection type combo you need to select your current maximum internet connection
speed. Please call your internet provider if you don’t know this speed. “k” means Kilobits, and “MBit”
means “Megabits”. Please note, that 1 Kilobyte = 8 Kilobits and 1 Megabyte = 8 Megabits.

At the current port box combo you can select port number uTorrent will use. Please change this
setting only if you know what you are doing.

If you are using a firewall, you will need to open this port at it. It is better (however, not absolutely
safe) to allow uTorrent all internet activity if you don’t know how to setup a firewall for it.

If you are using a router to access internet you will need to setup port forwarding for current port at
it for uTorrent to work correctly. Please refer to your router user manual for instructions on how to do
this. Such instructions also can be found on Google by entering “setup port forwarding”. Sometimes you
can append your router model to find and instruction for your particular model. You can also consult
uTorrent Help file for more information about port forwarding and other tricks.

If firewall is not setup correctly, it may happen, that you will not be able to download anything from
support area.

If your router is not setup correctly, you may have very slow download speed because you will not
be able to accept incoming connections.

After you finished configuring uTorrent SpeedGuide, please click Use Selected Settings button in its
window.

Now we need to change some settings in uTorrent. Open uTorrent preferences menu In appeared
window please go to Downloads section.

Check Put new downloads in checkbox and select a folder you want uTorrent to place files that he
currently is downloading. This is the directory for incomplete files, that are in progress.

Also check Move completed downloads to checkbox and select a folder you want to place
downloaded files to. It will be better if this folder will be the place where you permanently keep
downloaded files. In this case you will have no problems following support rules (you will need to keep
your uTorrent active to share files with other users to achieve high support ratio).

Please also check Append .!ut to incomplete files checkbox. It will help you to easily distinguish
incomplete and complete downloads.

To avoid problems, where you run out of disk space in the middle of downloading, we also
recommend to check Preallocate all files checkbox. In this case uTorrent will allocate space for them at
the very start of download.

Now please navigate to Queuing section.

Please setup Maxumim number of active torrents (upload or download) to about 30 and
Maximum number of active downloads to 5. This will help you to achieve best experience.

Please also set Seed while Ratio is to -1 and seeding time is to Ignore. This will help you to achieve
high ratio at support area and will ensure you are fully use it’s features.
Now please navigate to Advanced -> Disk cache section.

Please check Disable Windows caching of disk writes and reads. If you will not do this, uTorrent
may consume too much system resources disturbing your work.

You can leave all other settings to their defaults or use uTorrent Help from Start menu to learn more
about various uTorrent settings.

Downloading with uTorrent

While browsing support area just click on a file you want to download.

After that tell your browser to Open it. Remember, you are now opening just an informational file
for uTorrent to know where to download file you want from.

It will be opened by uTorrent. Set where you want to save file from support area at Save As box and
press OK button to start downloading it. At this point after you press Ok button actual downloading
process will start.

When all your settings are ok, you will see a green checkmark at the bottom of uTorrent window:

It means, that all your system settings are ok. If you see yellow exclamation mark there – it means
no incoming connections are allowed by your firewall or router or provider and your download speed
will be slow.

If you have red mark there, it means, you cannot download anything because uTorrent cannot
connect to anywhere. Check your firewall and other settings in this case.

Seeding files you already have


If you have some files on your HDD, which are also available at support area, you can seed them
without downloading a complete file. To do that just download the same file from support area and
save it “overwriting” the file you already have. uTorrent will check your file and if it completely matches
the one at support area, will start seeding it.

Your support area profile

Your support area profile shows various statistics about your account. Green globes mean you are
ok with support area rules (which you can learn by clicking the appropriate link at the bottom of profile
window). Yellow globe means you are close to rule violation.
Please try to have all globes green to have full-speed features at support area.

A line with Proxy server status shows, if support system detected any proxy server between you and
the server. You might even don’t know that your provider proxifies your connection, but it does. Not all
proxies are bad. But some incorrectly configured ones are. They can even prevent you from
downloading something from server seed. If you cannot download even a single byte on torrents with 1
seed and no peers, it may mean, that it is your proxy server changes HTTP headers so that you cannot
download anything.
If proxy server is detected – it is not a rule violation. Just a warning for you.

Increasing ratio and download speed.


There is a special page at support area – Assistants. On it you will find two assistants. The first one
will show you which files you can download quickly from support area. And the second one will show
you files, that you can seed to increase your rating.
Use them wisely.
