Introduction Thermo GC Devices 3.0 includes the drivers for Thermo Scientific gas chromatographs (GC) and autosamplers
(AS) for use in conjunction with Thermo Foundation 3.0 SP1 and Thermo Scientific™ Xcalibur™ 3.0 software. This
CD also contains the device drivers for Thermo Scientific FreeStyle 1.0 SP1 software. This CD is one component of
a driver installation for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry systems (GC-MS) that include, but are not limited
to, the following:
• Thermo Scientific™ TSQ 8000™ GC-Triple Quadrupole MS
• Thermo Scientific™ ISQ™ Series GC-Single Quadrupole MS
• Thermo Scientific™ DSQ™ and DSQ II GC-Single Quadrupole MS
• Thermo Scientific™ PolarisQ™ and ITQ™ Series GC-Ion Trap MS
• Thermo Scientific™ TSQ Quantum™ XLS, TSQ Quantum XLS Ultra, and TSQ Quantum GC GC-triple
quadrupole GC-MS/MS
GC Devices 3.0 includes drivers for the following devices:
• Thermo Scientific™ TRACE™ 1300 Series GC
• Thermo Scientific TRACE GC Ultra™
• Thermo Scientific™ FOCUS™ GC
• Thermo Scientific AI/AS 1310 Series autosampler
• Thermo Scientific AI/AS 3000 Series II and AI/AS 3000 autosampler
• Thermo Scientific™ TriPlus™ 100 Liquid Sampler autosampler
• Thermo Scientific TriPlus autosampler
• Thermo Scientific TriPlus 300 Headspace autosampler
• Thermo Scientific TriPlus RSH autosampler
• Thermo Scientific TriPlus (2) for DFS dual GC configuration

Note In order to install GC Devices 3.0, you will first need to confirm that Thermo Foundation 3.0 SP1 or higher
and Thermo Xcalibur 3.0 or higher are installed. To install these core components, insert the Xcalibur 2.2 GC-MS
Core Components CD and install the software using the installation help documentation.

Important For users of the TRACE GC Ultra in the LAN configuration, a change must be made to the inactivity time setting

New Installa- To install the GC Devices 3.0 for the first time:
tions 1. Insert the Thermo GC Devices 3.0 CD into the CD/DVD ROM drive of your computer.
2. If Auto-Play is enabled, the Xinstall menu will open. If Auto-Play is not enabled or if the Xinstall menu does not
appear automatically after inserting the CD, right-click Start, click Explore and find the CD drive. Double-click
on the CD drive to begin the Xinstall program.
3. Proceed through the installation by following the menu items from top to bottom.

Note The manuals for the GC and autosampler systems are not installed automatically when the drivers are
installed. To access the manuals, use this installation CD and click the GC and Autosampler Manuals button or
copy the manuals folder to a location on your computer. These manuals are supplied as PDF files.

4. Review the installation qualification report as needed for your installation.


5. Configure your installed GC and/or AS through Instrument Configuration.

Upgrading If you are currently using an older version of Xcalibur, you will need to first confirm that your data system meets the

according to the installation instructions included on the Foundation/Xcalibur DVD or CD that is provided with

1. Open Instrument Configuration by selecting Instrument Configuration.
2. Click the image of the device you want to remove and then click the Remove button. Repeat for all GCs and
autosamplers that need software to be removed.
3. Click Done to close Instrument Configuration.
4. Uninstall older versions of the GC drivers using Add\Remove Programs.
5. Overwrite your existing Xcalibur installation using the Foundation/Xcalibur DVD or CD according to the
instructions provided with the core components. Note that you will have to restart the PC after the Foundation
installation.
6. Insert the Thermo GC Devices 3.0 CD into the CD/DVD ROM drive of your computer.
7. If Auto-Play is enabled, the Xinstall menu will open. If Auto-Play is not enabled or if the Xinstall menu does not
appear automatically after inserting the CD, right-click Start, click Explore and find the CD drive. Double-click
on the CD drive to begin the Xinstall program.
8. Proceed through the GC Devices 3.0 installation by following the menu items from top to bottom.

9. Review the installation qualification report as needed for your installation.


Configure your installed GC and/or AS through Instrument Configuration.

Reinstalling To reinstall GC Devices 3.0:

autosamplers that need software to be removed.
3. Click Done to close Instrument Configuration.
4. Finish the reinstallation process by following the steps shown above in Upgrading the Driver Software.

Configuring When the TRACE GC Ultra is equipped with a LAN CPU card, the inactivity timeout setting needs to be set to
LAN Adapter 30,000 ms to effectively maintain communication with the software, even in periods of heavy data processing.
Depending on the serial number of your TRACE GC Ultra, the software tool used to manage the LAN CPU may

Time
To configure the NPort Management Suite:
1. Open the NPort Management Suite by selecting Start | All Programs | NPort Management Suite |
Configurator.
2. Click the magnifying glass button on the tool bar or click Locate Server from the menu to automatically search
for the TRACE GC Ultra LAN adapter.
3. Double-click on the IP address for the TRACE GC Ultra to configure the adapter.
4. In the Configuration window, click the OP_mode tab and select the Change OP_mode checkbox. Then click
the More Settings button.
5. In the TCP Server window, set the Inactivity time field to 30,000 ms and click OK.
6. Click OK again to upload these settings to the LAN adapter. When the settings have been uploaded successfully,
you can close the NPort utility and proceed to the Instrument Configuration process for the TRACE GC Ultra.

To configure the Network Enabler:


1. Open the Network Enabler application by selecting Start | All Programs | Network Enabler.
2. Under Configuration, select Broadcast Search.
3. After the software has located the configuration of the LAN CPU, right-click on the IP address for the LAN
CPU and select Configure.
4. Click the Operating Mode tab, check the Modify checkbox, and click Settings.
5. In the Operating Mode window, enter 30,000 ms for the Inactivity Timeout, then click OK.
6. Click OK to send the new settings to the LAN CPU. You will receive a confirmation message noting,
Configuration is applied ok. Click OK and close the Network Enabler tool.
7. Click OK again to upload these settings to the LAN adapter. When the settings have been uploaded successfully,
you can close the utility and proceed to the Instrument Configuration process for the TRACE GC Ultra.

To configure NPort Search Utility:


1. Open the NPort Search Utility by selecting Start | All Programs | NPort Search Utility and locate NPort Search
Utility.
2. Right-click on NPort Search Utility and select Run as Administrator from the options (Windows 7).
3. Confirm the User Account Control message so NPort Search can make changes to the computer (Windows 7).
4. The NPort Search Utility will open.
5. Select Search from the tool bar. This will allow the utility to search for IP connections. A search window will
appear.
6. After completing the search, the NPort Search Utility will return with a list of LAN connections. Select the
device corresponding to the TRACE GC Ultra and double-click on it to bring up the console.
7. Select Serial Settings and confirm that the baud rate is set to 38400. Change as applicable and click Submit to
save.
8. Select Operating Settings and set the inactivity time to 30,000 ms. Click Submit to save, then close the console.
9. Select Exit to close the NPort Search Utility.
