CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS

A. Defines contemporary arts in the Philippines.

OBJECTIVES

▪ Explain the meaning of art; and

▪ differentiate contemporary art from modern art.

B. Content Explanation

INTRODUCTION
The World of Art

What is Art? There are many definitions of this term. Art is the expression of an individual or
community’s views, values, ideas, or feelings in a creative form. It moves and affects us so that we
feel and see beauty in its artistic form.

Who makes Art? An artist makes art. The artist is a person who uses imagination and skill to
communicate ideas, feelings, even attitudes about life. We look at and listen to a work of art and we
experience a kind of awe and admiration. We think of the artist’s talent as something extraordinary,
almost magical, even divine. And the wonder of it all is that the artist is first a human being, just like
us.

The term “ART” usually refers to the major arts- Painting, Sculpture, Literature, Music, and
Architecture. The term “arts” usually applies to all other arts like dance, drama, theater, and film.

The world of art is very vast. It would be helpful to categorize art in way that helps us
understand and appreciate it better. Art may be classified into the Performing Arts and Visual Arts.
The Performing Arts use the performing artist’s body, face, and presence as the medium. The
performing arts include dance, performed music, theater, dram and film. Artists who perform in front
of an audience include actors, dancers, musicians, and singers.

The visual Arts focus on artworks that are seen- drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture,
printmaking, and photography.

Through the study of arts, we can better appreciate the importance of varying artistic traditions
made available to us through generations which can well promote the character of the Filipinos as an
inborn artist.

Contemporary Art

ART21 defines contemporary art as the work of artist who are living in the twenty first century.
It provides opportunity to reflect in contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves and the
world around us.

Contemporary art is the art that springs out of the present- day events passions of the society.
It is the newest form of art. It is a combination of mixed styles, materials, techniques, and concept.
