INTRODUCTION

In past years our surveyor are not using any kind of surveying machine such as
theodolites, total station and etc. although they use simple materials that called
leveling hose. A hose level is a simple device that can provide an accurate
elevation comparison between multiple points that rival each other to be a county
high point, or to be the highest summit of a major peak (and therefore the summit
that takes its prominence).

Leveling hose is a device used for matching elevations of locations that are too
far apart for a spirit level to span. The simplest water level is a section of clear
tubing, partially filled with water. Water is easily procured for use, and easily
discarded after use. The ends are held vertical, and the rest of the tubing lies on the
ground or floor. The water level at each end of the tube will be at the same
elevation, whether the two ends are adjacent or far apart.

The using of leveling hose is precise also to getting the height of elevation
because it will 100% the both end of the hose is equal of elevation.

OBJECTIVE

 The students learn in how to use leveling hose/tube.

 Understand the concepts of leveling hose/tube.
 Measuring distance of hose.
 Computing the area of polygon using leveling hose/tube.
TOOLS

 Levelling tube with water- is a device used for matching elevations of

locations that are too far apart for a spirit level to span
 Nylon thread- To put after using leveling tube to measure the horizontal
distance.
 50m tape- To measure the nylon and get the horizontal distance.
 Chalks- To mark the leveling hose and determine the elevation.
INTSTRUCTIONS

1. The students must first locate and mark the vertices of the hexagon
that they wish to measure.
2. The improvised batter board will then be placed on the vertices.
3. The students will then fill up the levelling hose by water. Make sure
that bubbles will not be present to avoid errors.
4. The students will then place the levelling hose on the two vertices of
the side that they wish to level.
5. Wait for the water to settle on both ends, then mark it.
6. The nylon will now be tied to the specific place where the students
marked it. Make sure that the nylon is not sagging to avoid errors in
measurements.
7. Start measuring the length of the used nylon. To be precise, make
measurements every 5 meters. Make sure that it is aligned with the
nylon; sagging of the tape is avoided.
8. Measure the remaining five (5) sides of the hexagon through the
repetition of steps 4, 5, 6 and 7.

DISCUSSION
In this fieldwork, we computed the distance and area of 6-sided
polygon or hexagonal without using surveying machine like theodolites,
precise level or total station although we use measuring tape, nylon and
leveling hose. Since we did not know the elevation of the surface because
the road are inconsistent the elevation each station are different to each
other so we use a leveling hose to determine the elevation of each station.

The first method we used is putting a water in leveling hose, it may hard
for use to fill up of all water in leveling hose because of the compacted of
each part of the hose that cause of bubbles. After we complete and ready
the leveling hose we hold in both end of tube to mark the elevation of each
station (if you mark the elevation, the water should no longer moving). Next
is tied the nylon thread in the marking of elevation and measure the nylon
thread using measuring tape in end to end of station to determine the
horizontal distance. Repeat the instruction in all station and collect the data
to compute the area of a triangles and the total area of a polygon by using
Heron’s formula.

Since we determined and computed the distance and area of a triangle

as indicated in the computation, the next step is summing up the all area of
a triangles to obtain the total area of a polygon. The total area of a
hexagonal is 300.85 m2. The using of leveling hose is accurate to obtain an
elevation of the place.

The problems we encountered in this fieldwork are the filling of water in

leveling hose because of compacted itself that cause of bubbles, the cars
passing by can cause of delaying the activity and the weather because of
heat can cause slowly the production.

CONCLUSION
Leveling hose is a device used for matching elevations of locations that are
too far apart for a spirit level to span.

In this experiment the all objectives are accomplished, we learned the

concepts behind in leveling hose. We determined the area of hexagon without any
surveying machine such as theodolite, etc. Instead, we used a levelling tube and
nylon thread to get the horizontal distance of the sides while making sure that the
elevation is equal. The getting the area, we used Heron’s formula to obtain the area
of each triangles and compute the total area of a polygon by sum up of all area of
triangles. Hence, the area of our polygon is 300.85 m2

Leveling hose has a big contribution in surveying because it can compute the
elevation without any advance surveying machine and the cost of this material is
not expensive other equipment. As a future engineers, it is important to learn how
to use leveling hose because some project in engineers might small that cannot
afford advance machines to compute the area of a project. However, this
knowledge is very helpful as engineer to improvise this material to compute the
elevation without any kind of surveying machines.

RECOMMENDATION

I will recommend in future students/surveyor are to maximize your

patience doing this experiment because unlike in surveying machine you
will not experience that kind of hassle while you doing leveling hose. Lastly,
the students/surveyor increase their creativity to lessen the time consuming
while fill up the water in leveling hose.
