THE NECKLACE
1. PLOT
a. Introduction
Set in Paris, France in 1880. A young middle-class woman dreams of a lifestyle
far beyond her reach. One day, her husband comes home with tickets to attend a
very affluent party, and she is excited to attend, but upset that she will look
dowdy.

b. Rising Action
Mathilde refuses to attend the party without a suitable dress. Mr. Loisel borrows
money to buy a new one. She doesn’t have jewelry and borrows a necklace
and then she loses it after the party. Mr. and Mrs. Loisel borrow money to
buy a new necklace and live in poverty for years to pay off the debt.

c. Climax
10 years later and relieved of the debt. Mrs. L. confesses all to Mrs. Forestier
who reveals that the necklace is fake.

d. Falling Action
Mrs. Loisel has aged dramatically.
Mr. and Mrs. Loisel have now wasted ten years of their lives working to pay off a
debt. and their dislike for each continues to grow.

e. Denouement
Mme. Loisel finds out the necklace is worthless after finally paying it off and
telling the truth to Mme. Foister.. She begins to question what is really important in
her life.

2. Characters with description


 MATHILDE LOISEL – she was born into a family of clerks but has always
dreamed of being rich.
 MONSEIR LOISEL – husband of Mathilde, and is a minor official at the
Ministry
 MADAM FORESTIER – she is mathilde’s rich friend
3. Setting of the Story
 The Loisel’s apartment in the Rue des Martyrs, in Paris, France.
The apartment is worn out and dull.
 The Ministerial Mansion where the ball held

4. Theme of the story


 People should be contented on what they have.
 People may pay terrible price for greed

5. Conflict
( INTERNAL CONFLICT / MAN VS. HIMSELF )
 Mathilde is unhappy with her life and her social status and constantly
wants more.

EXTERNAL CONFLICT
Mathilde lost Madame Folestier’s diamond necklace and has to earn money to
buy a new one.

MAN VS. SOCIETY


High class treats Low class unfairly.
