POLLUTION CONTROL &
WASTE HANDLING 001

This document summarises the measures taken by company to prevent pollution of the
environment during the course of their onshore construction operations on a site and the
emergency preparedness and reporting procedures in place should it occur.

1.2 Objective
The primary objective of this Pollution Control Procedure is to ensure that company
operational activities are not detrimental to the surrounding environment.

1.3 General Policy

company is committed to pollution prevention and control, and Subcontractors are required to
follow the same policy. company and its Contractors shall be responsible for disposal of all waste
generated by its work activity and shall provide suitable transportation for the removal of such
wastes.
Disposal of waste shall be carried out by authorised waste disposal Contractors in compliance
with local regulations.
2.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisors/Foreman
Supervisors and foreman shall ensure that all personnel are aware of the requirements of this
procedure and monitor its implementation.
Employees shall take reasonable care for their health and safety and of others who may be
affected by their acts or omissions and co-operate with company in complying with this
procedure.
3.0 POLLUTION CONTROL MEASURES
3.1 General
In case of an existing site Company Pollution Control Procedure, company shall be adhered
to this procedure.
The following section describes the measures to control or eradicate risk of pollution to the
environment from systems that are in place on a construction site.
3.2 Fuels
For transfer of fuel oil / petroleum (where applicable) from a supply ship or vehicle, the hoses
applied shall be fitted with non-return valves to prevent oil pollution / spillage during uncoupling.

Local regulations may require that special equipment with anti-pollution equipment is on standby
whilst this activity takes place.
The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that maximum precautions are taken during
transfer of fuels in order to prevent spillage.
3.3 Surplus Oils
Contaminated, dirty or un-reclaimable oils shall be stored in sludge tanks or dedicated barrels.
Dirty lube-oils shall be stored in dedicated tanks or barrels. Oils from both sets of tanks / barrels
shall be prepared for disposal by the method determined by the Construction Manager and
depending on the local site requirements and facilities. All tanks / barrels containing oil for
disposal shall be adequately identified with its contents.
3.4 Sanitary System
Toilet and urinal drains system will consist of septic tank. The site latrine system shall be
maintained in a clean and disinfected manner (twice daily), and regularly inspected.
3.5 Exhaust System
Exhaust gas systems shall be provided for all generators, motor, steam boilers and
incinerators. The exhaust pipes shall be insulated according to the authorities' requirements and
the insulation covered with sufficient steel plating for protection, each to be provided with the
necessary number of expansion bellows, drain pots, silencers and spark arrestors.

Air Emissions
The levels of emissions during road, pipe laying and facility construction operations are
very low, with the major sources being restricted to diesel fuel use during operations. Whilst
there is an overall contribution in terms of emission gases, the levels are insignificant in
comparison with other operations in tunisia.
3.6 Dust/Sand
Construction activities in normal operations will have impacts during the construction
period and the commissioning phase.
Transportation and earthworks (, pipe laying, trenching for cables, clearance of right of
way, etc.) are likely to generate dusty materials. As there are no inhabited areas all along the
pipeline and road right of way, impacts will be mainly limited to workers. Particles remaining
in the air may give rise to respiratory problems.
To reduce impacts from dust/sand during the construction phase, the main following
mitigation measures will be taken:

 Workers will need personal protection equipment against sand/dust

 Speed limit enforced on site
 Material stockpiles stored
 Vehicle movements restricted to sites and access roads

3.7. Land Disturbance

Disturbance to land and soils can occur through processes such as, excavation, laying of
cables, and deposition of other materials, the disturbance can cause changes to the flora and
fauna communities. There will be a minor localised disturbance of soils during road, pipeline
and GOSP construction.
The installation of the pipelines, roads and the GOSP construction will have little or no
impact on the ecology. Over the long term the pipelines will result in loss of existing habitat
but will potentially provide a new habitat for of a variety of fauna and flora.

3.8. Noise
Related to noise protection, at the time of purchasing or renting equipment, all
supervisory staff shall pay utmost attention and retain the responsibility of self-protection from
high noise level, activities mainly due to the operation of the following equipment:
 Earth moving machines.
 Welding units.
 Side booms and cranes.
 Portable power tools, grinders, drills, chipping machines.
 Pipe bending machines.
 Workshop equipment, bevelling machines, hammers.
 Sandblasting equipment.
 Transportation equipment, trucks, forklifts, buses.

4.0 WASTE HANDLING

General
Potential for waste minimisation must be evaluated throughout site operations, with the
following priority:
All waste generated must be identified, stored and transported.
Storage areas for waste is designed to contain all type of waste and is commonly for all
Companies who have accommodations in this aria.
Burnable waste can be burnt on site must be in a safe and controlled manner. Incinerator/
small burn pits far enough from construction areas for inert materials and burnable.
Non-burnable waste will be disposed of in a proper and controlled manner (e.g.: controlled
scraps yards and waste containers suitably stored). Wastes will be managed through the
existing client waste treatment system.
Dumping in the desert and abandon is forbidden.
Dry domestic wastes, normally generated from site and camp activities will be minimal,
given the short term nature of the programme.
Other waste types, such as industrial inorganic wastes (welding rods, paper, wood, oily
rags, non-metallic oil filters, absorbent pads, plastic wraps, packaging materials, and small
amounts of flammable materials) and hazardous wastes will be generated in small quantities.
Waste segregation will be applied at source and waste disposal via the established site
landfill system. Waste management for the project will be based on the concept of waste

minimisation and segregation at source. The volumes of wastes generated are small compared
with national levels.

5.0 INCIDENT REPORTING

All incidents within the site location will be reported to the site Company Representative.
