ES 201 THEORY OF STRUCTURES III

ASSIGNMENT 2_1

(Module 1: Torsion)
Date of Submission: 12-10-2018 before 9:35 AM

Maximum Marks: 10.00

1. What do you mean by strength of a shaft?

2. Explain simple torsion theory
3. Define the following terms with neat sketches

a) Torsional rigidity
b) Polar moment of Inertia
c) Torsion / Twisting moment
d) Simple Torsion

4. A hollow shaft of external diameter 120mm transmits 300 kW power at 200 rpm. Determine the
maximum internal diameter if the maximum stress in the shaft is not to exceed 60 N/mm2
5. In a hollow circular shaft of outer and inner diameters of 20cm and 10cm respectively, the shear
stress is not to exceed 40 N/mm2. Find the maximum torque which the shaft can safely transmit.
(December 2017, Third semester B-Arch Degree Examination)
6. Find the maximum shear stress induced in a solid circular shaft of diameter 15cm when the
shafts transmits 150kW power at 180 rpm
7. A hollow circular shaft of outer and inner diameter of 20 cm and 10 cm respectively, the shear
stress is not to exceed 40 N/mm2, find the maximum torque which the shaft can safely transmits.
8. A solid circular shaft is to transmit 300 kW at 100 rpm. If the shear stress is not to exceed 80
N/mm2, find the diameter of the shafts. What percentage in saving would be obtained if this shaft
is replaced by a hollow one, whose internal diameter is equal to 0.8 of the external diameter?
(length of the material and the allowable maximum shear stress being the same.)
9. A solid circular shaft is to be designed to transmit 22.5kW power at 200 rpm. If the maximum
shear stress is not to be exceeded by 80 N/mm2and the angle of twist is not to be exceeded by 1°
per meter length, determine the diameter of the shaft. Take modulus of rigidity as 80 kN/mm2
10. Determine the diameter of a solid steel shaft in a rolling mill which will transmits 300 kW of
power at 250 rpm. The maximum shear stress should not exceed 30 MPa and angle of twist
should not be more than 1° in a shaft length of 2m. Use modulus of rigidity of 1X105 N/mm2
