What is Caricature?

CARICATURE/KERIKE
a picture, description, or imitation of
a person in which certain striking
characteristics are exaggerated in
order to create a comic
The Hyperbole of Caricatures
When someone’s caricature is drawn
they’re likely to have features that are
bigger or smaller than they are in real
life.

The Purpose of Caricatures


It’s a way to distort the basic essence of
a person creating a Better version of
them with a touch of humor.
Satire and Humor in Caricatures
A caricature artist is often interested
in satire and humor. He or she uses the
pencil, pen, marker, digital pen, or
computer mouse to come up with a
rendering of someone that’s just a little
“out there” in order to make others
smile or laugh.
POLITICAL CARICARURE
Have been considered as vehicles of
history . As products of a certain
period these cartoons content, form
and functions provide viewers with a
look at how lives were lived on the era
they represent.
5 main elements to convey point of view
Symbolism – using an object to stand for an idea.
Captioning & Labels – used for clarity and
emphasis.
Analogy – a comparison between two unlike things
that share some characteristics.
Irony – the difference between the way things are &
the way things are expected to be.
Exaggeration – overstating or magnifying a
problem or a physical feature or habit: big nose,
bushy eyebrows, large ears, baldness, etc.
Symbols Used in Political Caricature
Peace – dove, olive branch, victory sign, scales
of justice.
United States – Uncle Sam, flag, stars and
stripes, shield, lady liberty.
Democrats – donkey.
Republicans – elephant.
Death – vulture, skeleton, skull and
crossbones, grim reaper.
Love – heart, Cupid, Venus
Money – dollar/peso bill or dollar/peso sign.
Steps to analyzing a political cartoon:
1) Identify the characters, symbols, and objects in
the cartoon.
2) Look for clues and details that would give
further meaning.
3) Identify the main idea of the cartoon by reading
any captions and by putting the message in your
own words.
4) Identify any bias the cartoonist might have
