III. HOW DID INNOVATIONS CHANGE LIVES?

Perhaps human beings nowadays cannot live (functionally in society) without the

presence of smartphones, so I choose my handy-dandy iPhone as my technology. Personally, my

phone is, if not the most, one of the most important things in my life that I have to have on a

daily basis – it’s not that I am completely dependent on my phone though, it’s only because it

has been proven essential to my day-to-day living. I use it mostly to interact with people whom I

cannot meet up with instantaneously – from peers to family members to teachers and even

strangers whom I bought from online. This is especially necessary to be able to do due to the

pandemic. I also use it to study, to research, listen to music, take pictures, know the date and

time, know the weather, read the news, and etcetera. Cellphones make our lives way easier than

it has ever been; thanks to them, the impossible feats of before can now be done with a single tap

of your fingertips. The purposes of a smartphone are endless, and they will continue to grow over

time. Here is a quick look back at history to see how far cellphones have evolved through time

through innovation:

Simon Personal Communicator: 1992

The First iPhone: 2007

New Generations: 2018

The first ever smartphone (1992), invented by IBM, had a bulky telephone-like design,

had a battery life of an hour, and had features that regular cellphones at the time did not have like

email, address book, faxes, touch screen, and predictive typing – this is the mother of all

smartphones, this is where it all started. Then in 2007, the first iPhone was released; it had 8

hours of battery life (250 if unused), and had features like music, maps, searching, web

browsing, and etcetera. It had some functions that you used to only be able to access in

computers. Just 2 years ago, a new breed of smartphones arrived; and they’re better than ever. It

could take HQ pictures and videos that could be saved in cloud, has a longer battery life, can

serve as a bank (e-banking), a way to travel (uber and grab), have AI technology (Siri and

Google Assistant), and basically everything you could think of under the sun. Smartphones have

changed over time for the better, and it’ll keep getting innovated as long as humans experiment

and discover.
