incomplete without acknowledging the people who were responsible for the completion of the
project, we would like to thank our valuable principal Dr.N.Azhagesan who had encouraged us
in all activities.

We express our deep sense of gratitude to our beloved & eminent Mr. M.Ganesan,
Head Of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department, who guided us and was a pillar of
support for the successful completion of the project without his able support and guidance we
would not have successfully complete our project.

We express our profound gratitude to our internal guide Mrs. P.Aruna Prakashini..
Lecturer (EEE) who shared his valuable knowledge with us and who had encouraged us in all
activities for the entire course of the project.

We would like to thank extend our gratitude to DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER

Training and Development, Training complex, NLC ltd.

We convey our hearty thanks to Shri.P.P.RAVEENDRAN,CHIEF

MANAGER/ELEC/C&I/ TPS-I, NLC LTd., who right from the beginning had a great mission
in his mind. Who guided us for the entire project and he provided valuable suggestions to
improve our project.

We would like to profusely thank NLC management, who gave as permission to do this project
in THERMAL POWER STATION – 1. We owe our gratitude & sincere thanks to all the authorities of
the training complex and TPS1, who had helped as in obtaining the required input information. Last but
never the least; we would be honored to thank our parent and other staff members of the department for
their continued support behind this greater achievement during the course of our successful project.
ABSTRACT
Multilevel converters offer high power capability associated with lower output

harmonics and lower commutation losses. Their main disadvantage is their complexity,

requiring a great number of power devices and passive components, and a rather complex

control circuitry. This work reports a new multilevel inverter topology using an H-bridge

output stage with a bi-directional auxiliary switch. The new topology produces a significant

reduction in the number of power devices and capacitors required to implement a

multilevel output and allows to operate in a variable frequency with the help of

Microcontroller. The new topology is used in the design of a five-level inverter; only five

controlled switches, eight diodes, and two capacitors are required to implement the five-level

inverter using the proposed topology. The new topology achieves a 37.5% reduction in the

number of main power switches required (five in the new against eight in any of the other

three configurations) and uses no more diodes or capacitors that the second best topology in

the literature, the Asymmetric Cascade configuration. Additionally, the dedicated

modulator circuit is replaced with a 8051 microcontroller to obtain a variable frequency

reducing overall system cost and complexity. Theoretical predictions are validated using

simulation in MATLAB, and satisfactory circuit operation is proved with experimental tests

performed on a laboratory prototype.
