My Name Is Ben
Read this short article about Ben, then answer True or False for the

questions below.

My name is Ben and I come from Australia. I am 24 years old and I live in

a small town near Sydney called Branton.

I don't have a job now, but normally I clean shop windows. I am not

married but I live with my very beautiful girlfriend, Maria, in a nice house

in Branton. We don't have any children - maybe next year.

My girlfriend is an actress, but she isn't very famous. She acts in a small

theater in our town. At the weekend, we like to go swimming in a big lake

near our house.

I normally get up at eight o'clock, but on Thursday I get up at six o'clock

because that is the day when I go running in the park.

I like living in Branton because it's not too big. There are some historical

buildings in the center of the town and near Branton, there is a river where

I go fishing sometimes when I want to relax.

Teenage problems

Read the poem. What problem has the person got? Think of a title for the poem.

. There are people here but I feel alone.

. There are people here but they don't see
. How cruel words are hurting me.
. I try to be strong.
. I´m not wrong.
. It´s not my fault,
. But who can I speak to?
. Who can I phone?
. I feel so alone.

A sixteen- year-old girl called Kath wrote this poem in her diary. She had problems
with bullies at school. They insulted her every day because of her race and
colour. Her life became very difficult.
But how many teenagers have this type of problem? In Britain an organization called
Childline started in 1986 to give confidential telephone help to young people. People
can phone Childline 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and talk to a trained volunteer
about their problems. Childline has helped more than one million young people with
their problems. A lot of the calls were about bullies, but people had a lot of other
problems, for example: family relationships, eating problems, exam stress, worries
about friends, depression and racism.

And Kath? She talked to childline and then to her parents and teachers. They helped
her to solve her problems and now she's much happier. Adolescence can be a difficult
time, and the statistics show that a lot of people need advice. So remember, if you´ve
got a problem, don't wait too long- speak to someone soon.

6
Read the poem again and then read the text. Answer the questions.

1. Did people know about Kath´s problem when she wrote the peom?
2. Where did Kath have problems with the bullies?
3. How do people contact Childline?
4. When can people contact the trained volunteers at Childline?
5. Who helped Kath with her problems?

What seven types of problem does the text mention? How do you say the words in
your language?
