Aim

To determine the amount of liquid and solid matter in the mud. This
liquid which may be water or water and oil.
Or for calculating weight percent, volume percent and average
specific gravity of solids in the mud.

2
Theory
Advantages of this test:

1) To control mud properties.

2) To evaluate viscosity and solid control equipments.
3) To Know the oil percent in oil emulsion muds.

In this experiment:
Can be measure the amount of solids in the mud (average).
Can not be determine the amount of each solid material.

3
Theory (cont.)

Material SG or Density Density (ppg)

(gm./cc)
Water 1 8.33

Bentonite 2.5 20.8

Barite 4.2 35

4
Test Equipment
50 ML Retort Kit used to show the percent of liquid and solid
contents in the mud.
Insulator
Condenser block

Spatula
On/Off
button Leveling Lid

Mud Chamber
Tong
Graduated
Cylinder
Brush Steel wool

5
Test Procedure

1) Prepare a mud by mixing bentonite and water.

2) Put 50 ml of the mud to the mud chamber.
3) Tightening the leveling lid on the top of mud chamber.
4) Connecting cables.
5) Switch on the device.
6) After 45 min, switch off device, after that read liquid volume
in graduated cylinder and find solid volume by calculation.
7) Wait 15 min for cooling mud chamber and carefully holding
the mud chamber by tong because it is very hot.
8) Clean leveling lid by spatula and mud chamber by brush.

6
Calculation

Total mud volume = 50 cc(ml)

Liquid volume = 41 cc
Solid volume = 50 – 41 = 9 cc
Water % = (41/50) * 100 = 82% = 0.82
Bentonite % = (9/50) * 100 = 18 % = 0.18

7
Discussion

1) Why do you do this test?

2) What is the main idea of this test?
3) If you have two solid in the mud, can you find the
specific gravity of each solid?
4) How much mud you use in this test? Why?
5) What is the advantage of using Spatula, Brush and
Tong in this test?
6) Why do you use Steel Wool inside mud chamber in this
test?(HW)
7) Add more point that you will find in searching internet.

8
Example 1:

For laboratory purpose, use (120 cc) of water based mud that consists of
water and bentonite, if the water percent used for preparing that mud is
85%. Calculate the density of the mud?
