Read the passage and answer the questions below.

`W ithout modern technology, Michael Chorost

wouldn't be able to hear a thing. Chorost went
deaf in 2001 after a lifetime of hearing problems.
He was fitted with an implant in his brain that allows him
to hear. This experience inspired him to write his first
boc>k, Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me
More Human.
2 Chorost is now a widely known technology theorist. He
writes and gives talks about how the technology of the future
will integrate with the human body. But Chorost does not see
technology improving upon abilities we already have. His own
hearing implant, for example, works well enough for him to
have a phone conversation, but he's still very much a person
with hearing loss. "lt's very difficult for scientists even
to understand how hearing and vision and motion work," he
says, "and it's very hard to reengineer those things."
3 Instead, Chorost sees the main role of human-integrated
technology as providing us with entirely new abilities.
One such example, he says, could be a device that connects two people's brains, allowing them to know
each other's feelings. "I don't use the word telepathy," says chorost, "I use the word telempathy." `
4 Indeed, Chorost's own implant, while not granting him superhuman hearing, has given him one new
ability. He is now able to turn off his hearing any time he likes, such as when he is writing. "I actually feel a
little sorry for hearing people," says Chorost, "who hear the sirens, their own breathing, other people snoring.
It's nice to not have that problem."
