Unit Number and Title 9 Principles of Heating Services Design & Installation
Assignment Title Heating System Design and Plant and Equipment Selection.
Submission Format
The submission is in the form of an individual written report. This should be written in a concise,
professional style. The selection of font face, font size and line spacing are left to your discretion.
However, you should keep in mind that clarity and readability are key factors in professional
documents.
You are encouraged to make use of drawings, graphics, charts, etc. Any material (images, graphics,
drawings, text) that is derived from other sources must be suitably referenced using a standard form
of citation. Provide a bibliography, using an academic standard format.
The recommended word limit is 3,000–3,500 words. You will not be penalised for exceeding the total
word limit, but being concise and clear are key features of professional documents.
You are employed as a trainee building services design engineer by a medium-sized building services
engineering firm.
You have been provided with the drawings of a building and all the other necessary information
about it, and you are tasked with calculating the heat load on the building using both U-value
calculations and environmental heat loss processes for the whole building which will determine
plant ratio and response times. Based on this information you should:
Identify the factors that affect both client and building requirements relating to the design
and provision of space heating systems. Also briefly explain how each factor might affect the
provision of a space heating system for a building; this part of the task must be linked
specifically to the two building types covered in the task below.
Identify the design parameters, which should be specified for the design of space heating
systems. This task is based around the details provided at the start of the unit for two
different buildings, a five-storey office block situated in Manchester and a light engineering
factory situated in Glasgow. Produce a design specification to detail the heating requirements
of each building.
Discuss how thermal indices can be applied to consider the likely comfort levels provided by
space heating systems. Explain the three forms of radiation asymmetry and how the possible
effects of each can be minimised and discuss the likely effects on the building’s occupants.
Discuss the current regulations that impact on designing modern heating systems in
nondomestic structures.
A building measures 40 x 35 x 3.5m high and has five windows each 3.0 x 2.5m. Determine
the response factor for the building and obtain the recommended preheat time for a fixed
start.
