COMPARISION BEWTEEN POST MODERNISM AND

MODERNISM

Architecture is been changing with time and era .There has been different
architectural style that has came but the most powerful impact architectural
style is modernism and post modernism

MODERNISM : Modernism spanned from late19th century to 20th century. It

was based on new technology of construction, less ornamentation, use of
material like glass, steel, reinforced concrete etc. It mainly adapted the
concept of “ form follow function “.Some of the architect who were actively
participate in modernism were Frank Lloyd wright, Ludwig mies van der
rohe ,Le Corbusier ,Walter Groupis, etc. Some of the example of modernism
era are Lovell house,Miller house , Corona school bell.

VILLA SAVOVYE: Villa savovye is design by Le Corbusier in 1929 it located in

poissy paris france.It was one of the best example for modernism.
The concept of le Corbusier was a person approach toward the house be best
experienced by a passenger in a car past the entrance gate the visitor vision
is obstructed by tress . the house reveal itself all at once as a grand white
box , hovering on columns.

The cubical is the main form le Corbusier shown in

fig 1 and then he subtract from bottom to up for make the
curve shape in fig 2 and then he again subtract from the
top of cubical shape to get an open area for lighting
circulation and ventilation which shown in fig 3.
CONCLUSION :

1) From studying this design we came to know that modernism is just not
about minimalism how the design is done .
2) Villa savoye from outside just look like a box nothing else but
internally it has three different level and a ramp nobody can guess it
has so many thing in it . The outer column are placed because the site
land is very wet and clay soft so pile foundation is done
3) New technique of construction are use like reinforced concrete ,glass
window .
POST MODERNISM : Post modernism spanned from late 20th to 21th century .
It is the after effect of modernism. Architect rediscover the expressive and
symbolic value of architectural element that evolved through centuries of
building which had been abandoned by modern style. Some of the architect
who have taken actively participate in post modernism are Robert venture
,Michales graves , Charles moore, Philip Johnson ,Frank gehry. Some of the
example of post modernism era are Portland building, Team Disney building ,
Denver public library ,AT&T building ,bank of American centre.

CONCLUSION:

Minimalism or less ornamentation is good but symbolic architectural element

are best. The aesthetic elevation symbol can change the feel of a place .
Symbol , colour are one of the major thing which people can relate to their
day to day life.
