Centre for Art and Architecture Histories

-Project Brief
The site for Centre for Art and Architecture has been proposed in
Dharamshala that is dedicated to the preservation of local culture in
literary and artistic forms. So, in view of that, we have proposed the
design of the centre in such a manner that it provides a physical
environment, which would serve as a catalyst for a cooperative
relationship among the community working in diverse areas and
would therefore maximize their total effectiveness. It also caters the
need to learn while depicting how the structure is being influenced by
the cultural heritage of the region, that defines that particular city, and
differentiates it from the others. It aims to set a platform for
Artists/Architects to share their work and experiences through
exhibitions, seminars, events, festivals with common people through
engagement in formal as well as informal activities.

The Centre is divided into various blocks which are centrally linked
by courtyards and sculpture garden and are assessed through a
stone pathway with waterbodies running alongside that too includes
an open air theatre that acts as an interactive space.

The centre’s art studios includes Bamboo artwork of the dome

tribe, sculpture designing, Woodcarving, Thangka paintings
Thapada and Kohana embroidery workshops, cultural dance
studios, and music studios which reflect the heritage of the city. This
block also includes a complex that comprises of art galleries,
museums and auditorium that exhibits the workmanship of
craftsman and artisans. Several dialects have been scripted on the
walls of the complex which provides a sensation of belongingness to
the city.

The centre also has an institution for architecture students where they
can learn through formal syllabus and informal activities and
interactions including the design studios, workshop area, seminar
halls. The research centre along with a huge library and the deodar
tree at the centre provides a calm and soothing environment to read.
The accommodation includes hostels and residential areas along with
the gymnasium.

Thus, the design expresses the unique geography and cultural heritage
of the area.
