For my first artifact of leadership and system thinking skills, I chose to use my
Thursday folder. I have attached the questions we were supposed to respond to and my
answers. In this assignment we were to research our local and state public health websites.
I felt that this assignment allowed to me be more educated about different organizations
and what they are offering for the public. Before this assignment I hadn’t ever seen
the websites, nor could I tell you what those departments roles really were. I learned a lot
exploring these websites and feel more competent in what the differences are between the
local and state offices and how these offices can help people in my area and state.

Thursday Folder #3- Governmental Public Health Systems

Based on your findings answer the following questions for Thursday Folder #3. (each 5 pts.)

1. What local and what state public health organization did you explore? Write out the title
and provide the weblink. As a citizen, what can you learn by looking at local and state
public health websites?

I decided to explore Panhandle Public Health Department. https://panhandlehealthdistrict.org/

Washington State Public Health Department. https://www.doh.wa.gov/

The Idaho websites did not work, so I chose the closest to me which is WA.

I learned about their services, community programs, events, and other major topics they offer in
their website. Health data and a lot of information about Covid-19 since that it is the main issue
these days.

2. Based on your review of state and local public health websites, how are the roles and
responsibilities the same and different between local and state public health?

Many of the responsibilities of the local public health department is included in the state
department. However, there is more about certifications, licenses, assessments and more of the
policies are investigated by them. Many other services are offered by them such as
immunizations, birth certificate and any health hazards in the state and the world.

Many corporations are present in the state health department which makes them a better
resources for citizens.

3. What public health related work on the state or local level intersects with the sort of work
you hope to do in the future? Discuss how/why.
I was looking at the Panhandle Health District Diabetes Program and it was helpful to know that
they offer two diabetes programs: Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in Hayden and Sandpoint,
and Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) in Hayden.

The first one is for people who are in risk of developing T2DM and do not already have diabetes.
Couches are leading this program by educating pre-diabetics in how to make lifestyle changes
that will help prevent the development of T2D. It’s is a yearlong program focused on lasting
results and monitoring people’s health.

The second program is for T2DM and T1D as well as gestational diabetes. Diabetes educators
conduct each program and address their needs, goals, and life experiences. This program teaches
the members who to eat healthy, be active, monitor blood sugar levels, take medication, problem
solve, reduce risk for other health conditions, and cope with their disease.

4. Write down three questions you would like to ask a local public health official and why
these questions are important to you.

- I would be interested in learning more about their cooperation with dietitians and nutritionist.
This will help me to know if there are educational opportunities for us as students and future RD

-I will be happy to know more about the telehealth they offer and if there is a nutrition
department that help in counseling and education people with chronic disease

- If they offer home health care, how is that going to work now with Covid-19?
