Megabits vs. Gigabits

Megabit
• The megabit is widely used when referring to data
transfer rates of computer networks
or telecommunications systems. use the megabit as
the amount transferred per time unit, e.g., a
100 Mbit/s (megabit per second) Fast-
Ethernet connection
Gigabit
• Gigabit Ethernet (GbE or 1 GigE) is the term
applied to transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of
a gigabit per second (1 billion bits per second). The
most popular variant 1000BASE-T is defined by
the IEEE 802.3ab standard.

Single DLR rings - Speed
Single DLR rings can be either mixed device/switch-level , switch-level, or device-level (not
pictured). The single ring configuration deploys a dedicated, DLR-capable IES as the ring network
egress point for the ring network.

• A single DLR ring speed can be set to either 100 Mbps/full duplex or 1 Gbps/full duplex but may not be intermixed between
ring participants within a single ring. The entire single ring must run at the same speed and cannot be intermixed.

Multiple DLR rings
Currently, the Stratix 5400 is the only IES capable of supporting as many as three device-level rings
simultaneously on the same IES.
• The Stratix 5400 has six dedicated DLR ring ports for up to three DLR Rings. Multiple rings cannot share the same ring
ports. Each ring can be logically isolated using VLANs.
• IES that can support multiple pairs of DLR ports must conform to the following rules:
• Each pair of DLR ports will operate independently from each other.
• Each pair of DLR ports will have separate DLR Objects, therefore logically each will have its own operational
code with unique parameters and MAC address tables.
For example, when Ring 1 is in a Normal State and Ring 2 goes into a Fault State, only Ring 2 unicast MAC address table
will be flushed.

DLR Design Consideration – Network Capacity
Network capacity is a critical metric in DLR ring planning

DLR ring nodes all share bandwidth on a ring network

• Too many devices connected to switches in a DLR ring can create bottlenecks and inconsistent
network behavior
• Overall Considerations:
• Design considerations (# of communicating devices in and out of ring)
• Limit a single VLAN to no more than (/24 subnet) 253 end devices
• Technical considerations (Mixed device/switch-level DLR <= 50 rings node limit).

Network Address Translation (NAT)
to allow reuse of application code
What is NAT?

 Network Address Translation is a service which can translate a packet

from one IP address to another IP address.
Outside Subnet
 Can be a Layer 2 or Layer 3 device (ex. 10.0.0.x)
 Has two forms:
Many Outside IP addresses
 One to Many (1:n) – a.k.a. TCP/UDP Port Address (One per device wishing to be accessible from the Outside Subnet
Translation (PAT). Allows Multiple devices to share
one “Outside” address NAT Enabled Device
 One to One (1:1) – Allows for the assignment
Many Inside IP addresses
of a unique outside IP address to a specific (One per connected device)
inside IP address
Inside Subnet
(ex. 192.168.1.x)
Inside

Why Use NAT?
Allows a single device to act as an agent between the
Plant (Outside) network and the Machine (Inside)
network

• Helps simplify integration of IP address mapping from a machine level IP addresses to the
plant network
• Allows Machine Builders to develop standard machines and eliminate the need for unique IP
addressing and code modifications
• Allows End Users to more easily integrate machines into their larger plant network without
extensive coordination with machine builders
• Provides better maintainability at the machines as they remain standard
• Allows for reuse of IP addresses allowing for more connected devices in a limited address
pool.
