Lesson Idea Name: Flipped Classroom Moon Phases

Content Area: Earth science: Space
Grade Level(s): Fourth Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of
the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Selected Technology Tool: Adobe Spark

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Empowered Learner 1c. Students use technology to seek
feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
Digital Citizen 2b Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology,
including social interactions online or when using networked devices.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☒ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) the technology tool that I chose for this lesson is Spark Adobe. I was able
to set my slides up with narration and music. Students will be able to view the video multiple times and go at
their own pace. Allowing students to post a flippgrid video gives them the opportunity to express themselves
in different ways. I left the prompt questions open-ended so they would have a easier time responding. This
technology will encourage engagement with the lesson because students will be able to share and respond to
other students flip grid.
Lesson idea implementation: Students will follow the lesson plan and create a flip grid video responding to
why they think the phases of the moon are different from one another. This project will be introduced as a
flipped classroom as a beginning of the lesson about the phases of the moon. The lesson will take 20 minutes
to complete and then an additional 20-30 minutes to answer the video assignment prompt. Student learning
will be assessed when they record a flip grid video about what makes each phase of the moon different and
which one they think they see most often.
For a final product we will go through each flip grid together in class to see other student’s responses and
address any misconceptions. This project extends to a higher learning level when they are able to remember,
understand, analyze, evaluate what they learned, apply it to the assignment and divulge the information
through a creative outlet. I will conclude this lesson by making a collaborative video with the students
showing correct information of what we learned and share it to our website. I will provide feedback to every
student by responding to their flip grid, either with a video or in-person.

MultiMedia Tools: Video
Importance of technology: Using a multimedia tool is critical to this lesson plan because the lesson is taught
in the video for students to watch at home. This allows the students more time to practice at school with the
teacher present to answer questions. We will also be using Flip grid for students to respond to the prompt
with then ultimately produce a video collaborating with that class.
Inspiration (optional): I borrowed ideas in ways to portray information in my slides.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Possible issues that may arise when dealing with online forums is it is
common for some teachers to violate student safety and privacy is if a student posts their information on an
online conversation application. I can minimize risks to students if they submit their videos to a drop box in
the learning platform the school uses. I would tell parents the videos the students make will not go anywhere.
They would just be used for in class purposes. I will follow the Acceptable Use Policy by making sure the
comments section on my classroom blog is moderated before showing upon my page.

Reflective Practice: This lesson idea in particular could impact learning in many positive ways. Students will
be able to understand the information given in the presentation because they can watch the video several
times until they understand, there is also a Youtube video explaining to students in other terms about the
topic. Also when they are responding to the prompt they are given the chance to discuss their knowledge
which will then be discussed in class to address misconceptions. This lesson is designed as an introductory
assignment so students will not need to feel pressured to understand everything yet. To further extend this
lesson I will design an activity using the materials to show students how the sun reflects light off of the moon
and why our position to the moon effects how we see the illumination.
