MATTOON — Memorial Day is in celebration of


those who have defended America, and at this year’s
observation of the holiday, veterans of wars were able
to salute those who gave their lives for their freedom.
The Mattoon ceremony included a 21-gun salute by
seven veterans of war. There was a memorial placed
on each war monument in Peterson Park and a
speech read by a veteran of war.

Memorial Day began after the Civil War when Vote

Currently, Smyser has two great-nephews who are serving in the Marines, and another who is in the army.

At the end of the Memorial Day ceremony, the crowd began to wither away, but the meaning of the day Eastern IL Area Spec Ed
