ANCIENT HISTORY The Meenakshi amman temple as the focus of the city, generates and ties up the activities around. The five layered concentric plan unfolds the temple progressively from veli veedhi to adi veedhi, also differentiating urban fabric in scale and morphology. The settlement pattern of Madurai is planned according to the ancient system of town planning which is based on caste and occupational hierarchies . So, the residential and commercial activities spread evenly in all directions as a result the pattern of urban expansion was radial. Later the development was due to rapid population growth and due to the restriction.the special growth of city is clearly delineated by the mono centric -city model The irregular concentric rings, supported the organic development of the city within fortification. Though most part of the inner city were planned centuries back, they did not follow a rigid grid iron pattern imposing regularity. The street width increases from inside to outside supporting the temple cars of different sizes. Conecting the built and unbuilt Unlike most Dravidian temples, the temple complex of Madura enclosing the tank within, The four gate mark the cardinal direction also opens up a transitional corridor connecting the outside with inside a close structure Open spaces The inner city shows complete lack of open spaces. The four concentric roads diverging from the temple were the only source of open space and acts as social and commercial corridor of the city with wide intersections Streets The size of the streets increases from the temple to the velai street. The inner street was pedestrianised, the next one allows only light vehicles, the third layer permits one way traffic while the outer street has heavy traffic flow. Axiality The four consecutive rings are not rigid and equidistant encouraging organic growth within the city. But, the four gates were marked with axial streets which unwind vistas and frame views to experience from different point. Shaded complex The temple complex is completely roofed except for the tank and outer procession streets . The hot dry climate makes it a shaded complex. The city itself is also composed of open concentric streets and shaded narrow perpendicular streets. Green strips as open space The tightly packed inner city leaves less opportunity for green spaces within outer concentric streets. The boundary of the temple is marked with high compound wall with a layer of greenery which becomes the only green patch available within old city. Tran: The gateway in respect with internal layout frame a transition spaces between street and temple. As the temple opens up in all four cardinal directions , the user TT is not channelised towards a single spatial narrative.
