INTEGRATED ROAD INVESTMENT PROGRAM
Need for Speedy Method
 Stage construction is limited due to restricted ROW
 Difficult to construct By-Pass roads due to restricted ROW and
Terrain/Geometry in Kegalle Area

 Impossible to close roads for longer durations

Solution – PRE CAST CULVERTS

Two types…..
* PRE CAST BOX CULVERTS
* PRE CAST HUME PIPE CULVERTS
PRE CAST BOX CULVERTS
 Pre Cast Box Culvert is formed by pouring Grade 25/20 concrete in to the
reinforced box panel which consist of 950mm Wide, 175mm Thick (Base &
Deck) and 600mm High & 175mm Wide Double Walls,1 m long at Pre Cast
yard.

 The inward & outward sockets can be introduced in pre
cast box panels which is used to control lateral, upward &
downward movements of pre cast boxes.

 After the curing, pre cast boxes shall be transported to construction sites by a
boom truck.
 Head Walls up to culvert Base Level shall be constructed before placing of pre cast
boxes.
 The Placing bed for Pre Cast Boxes shall be prepared with ABC (150mm Thick) plus
15mm Thick quarry dust layer.
 Pre Cast Boxes shall be placed across the road by a Boom Truck

 300mm wide Geo-textile Layers shall be wrapped at joints of pre cast boxes
to avoid infiltration of backfill material around the pre cast boxes in to the
culvert through the joints.

 The excavated area should be back filled using suitable material [Ex.
Sand, Quarry Dust, ABC or Soil] and ABC overlay will be done to allow
for traffic.

 The possible time frame for this method of a pre cast box culvert
completion is about 08 Hours, and can be opened for traffic.
(Except Balance Part of the Head Walls etc..)

 Labour Requirement
- Two Skilled Workmen
- Two Un-skilled Workmen
- Boom Truck Operator

 Head walls along the road shall be constructed up to road

finish levels and then catch pit for up stream side will be
launched to divert up stream flow.

 Down stream side leader way should be cleared for free

flow across the culvert to the end of leader way path.
