Police Shooting: Power of Language

Our words are more than just random phrases, they hold meaning within them as well as

power that enables us to make a difference. With many situations going on around the world,

such like Police Shooting, it is important for citizens to speak up and speak out about the

brutality they are facing in order to fight for their safety. Throughout the article, Disarm the

Police, it is emphasized how people have spoken up about disarming police since earlier years in

an effort to minimize the dangers that come their way. With many deaths caused by the police

intentionally, people have used their voices to inform about this situation, while also voicing

their opinions on ways to change our society.

A person’s voice is necessary in order to speak up on a situation or topic that has been

affecting them for a long time. The article states how there are far too many deaths of African

Americans people caused by armed police officials. Which is why in an attempt fight for their

safety, people “demand to divert funds from often obscenely militarized police forces.” The

word demand here is emphasized to demonstrate how strong words can be enforced in order to

get their message through. With the killing of people of color, such as “Rayshard Brooks being

shot in the back by Atlanta police,” or “the police in Louisville, KY., who killed Breonna Taylor

as she slept in her own bed,” and many more, there had been points in which others comments

have being conveying for safety treatment while also being aware that the treatment received is

far beyond fair.

While advocating for disarmed police due to police shootings it is important to provide an

alternative to society that will be beneficial. For the people demanding to defund police, they use

their voices and provide a different possibility for the funds to go to. In the article, it stated how
the unnecessary police funds should go to “health, education, housing, and other public

services,” which would change our society while making use of what no longer would be

harmful. Another way, that language is used powerfully here is when there is a contradiction of

one’s think, however, it is counter with a positive possibility of gaining safety. It’s stated “Why

not seize this moment to remove the daily threat of death by police that haunts African

Americans and their families? Why not remove one factor from the brutal calculus of ordinary

American violence?” In other words, even though there are police shooting due to armed police

officers, having a gun isn’t necessarily the case. What does matter is to speak about how

removing elements such as guns from police will help to slowly ensure that they are safe,

because at the end, the police are the ones that how judgment of how and who they are going to

hurt.
