6.1 Tensile properties (specimen 1E0552-X1, X2, X6, or X9) shall be as follows:
Longitudinal Or Transverse
Elongation in 50 mm, MIN 23% 20%
Or
Elongation in 200 mm, MIN 20% 18%
7.0 PRESAMPLES
The dispositioning Caterpillar facility may require suppliers of this material to furnish transverse
samples from each heat applied. Samples shall be at least
75 mm wide and as long as the width of the product permits, up to 450 mm. Samples for bar
orders shall be longitudinal and 450 mm long. One sample shall be furnished from the thickest
product rolled from each heat. A notification giving the heat number, purchase order and other
necessary identifying data shall be sent with the samples.
8.1 Substitute materials allow the chemical compositions of certain National Standard grade
steels to be used in place of 1E Specification chemistries, per the guidelines of 1E0024 and
1E2349 - Substitute Materials Application. When procuring any of the following substitute
grades, all other quality requirements of the original 1E Specification shall be met, such as
approved mill, reduction ratio, caster class, tensile properties, grain size, etc.
8.2 If steel purchasers do not understand these issues, they shall buy materials to the 1E
Material Specification or employ the services of Caterpillar Global Purchasing to assist in
material acquisition.
8.3 1E2349 governs approval requirements and procedures. This specification shall be read
and understood before using any of the substitute materials listed below.
