Lesson 10
Sample Answer to PART 1
Jokes & Comedies
1. Are you good at telling jokes?
Yes. I have been obsessed with telling jokes since I was a child. I was shy and used jokes as a means to
break the ice. I have a fairly broad appreciation for humor. I like puns and banter. I also like ironic humor
but I do easily get bored with pure farce.

2. Do your friends like to tell jokes? 7

Yes. Some of my friends are very fond of telling jokes. They know how to deliver a good joke. Even a bad
joke can be made funny by their vocal inflection. I really enjoy spending time with people who have a
sense of humor, because they can always make me laugh.

3. Do you like to watch comedies?

Yes. Comedy movies are a perfect source of relaxation and enjoyment. I am an admirer of comedy
movies, as comedy movies have got the capability to bring back smiles on gloomy faces.

Lesson 10
Sample Answer to PART 2
I’d like to talk about Mogu company, one of the leading companies specializing in selling clothes in
China.

It is an e-commerce company for online shopping purposes and provides a wide variety of style as well
as current fashion trend for both men and women. The company has been through so many ups and
downs that there was a time when they were on the edge of bankruptcy. At first, I didn’t care much
8
about it. Not until I came across an eye-catching dress when going shopping in the mega mall did I
become interested in its products. What amazed me is that the price is much cheaper than other
brands so I can get the best offer without asking for a bargain. Normally it would take me 3 days for
the merchandise to be delivered but here I just need to wait 2 days to receive it. Another thing is that
the refund policy of Mogu is much better than other companies. Customers can refund or return
unpleasing products within 7 days and get a brand new one with similar price, so that’s the reason why
Mogu has great customer base than other competitors.

Starting from modest investment to a leading company which is highly profitable and has thousands of
employees, Mogu is an icon for lots of start-ups and youngsters running their businesses.

Lesson 10
Sample Answer to PART 3

1. What are the differences between a big company and a small company ?
Well, I think small businesses not only differ in size from larger ones, but tend to have different
legal structures, financing arrangements and market niches. Small companies often focus on a
niche market, while larger companies tend to offer more products and services to a wider
variety of consumers.
9

2. Is it difficult to get a promotion in a large company?

Yes, I believe so. Big companies have more detailed job categories. Every employee is so focused
on their work that they do not tend to make sure that those in power recognize what they are
doing. Also, promotions come with leadership responsibility. If you cannot show that you are
good at office politics, that you get on well with people, that you can have business friends,
then no one will think you can lead.

Lesson 10
Sample Answer to PART 3

3. What are the advantages of working in a big company?

I think the greatest advantage to work at a large company, particularly for entry-level workers, is the availability
of formal training programs. Large companies have resources to offer training and mentoring programs for new
employees, while most smaller companies leave you to learn as you go or assume you’ll get help from co-
workers. Besides, large companies allow employees to focus on a certain range of responsibilities, and therefore 9
offer greater experience in a specific field or specialty. Depth of experience are highly valued on the job market,
since the hardest jobs to fill are often those that require specialists. Finally, larger companies, on average, offer
better pay and benefits than smaller companies.
