Lesson 1

Objectives:
In this lesson, you will greet others and introduce yourself.
A. Take a moment and think about the numerous ways we greet one
another. How might you greet a stranger? When we greet strangers it is
different than when we greet our family members. And greetings change
when adults, young people, men, and women greet each other.

Greeting dialogues based on the time of day


In the Spanish language your greeting will change based on the time of day and to
whom you are speaking!

8:00 am
 ¡Buenos días, señora!
Good morning madam!

4:00pm
 ¡Buenas tardes, señor!
Good afternoon, sir!

8:00pm
 ¡Buenas noches, señorita!
Good evening, miss!
Señor, señora, and senorita are abbreviated to Sr. Sra. And Srta. before a
person’s name. Now that you see how the greetings must change based on
the time of day, let’s take look at ways to continue each dialogue. Pay
close attention to the vocabulary words used.

8:00 am
¡Buenos días, señora!
¡Buenos días! ¿Cómo te llamas?
Me llamo Elena.

4:00pm
¡Buenas tardes, señor!
¡Buenas tardes! ¿Cómo te llamas?
Me llamo Diego.
Mucho gusto.
Encantada.

8:00pm
¡Buenas noches, señor! ¿Cómo te llamas?
¡Hola!
Me llamo María.
Mucho gusto.
Igualmente.

Adios is a pretty common way to say good bye in Spanish and is a well-
known farewell even in the US. Hasta luego, hasta manana, and nos
vemos are also ways to say farewell!
