5.0 INTRODUCTION

Metallography is the study of materials microstructure. Analysis of a materials

microstructure helps us determining if the material has been processed correctly and is
therefore a critical step for determining product reliability and for determining why a
material failed. The basic steps for proper metallographic specimen
preparation include sectioning and cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, final
polishing, etching, microscopic analysis.

Metallographic Examination tells us a great deal about the identity, composition

and thermomechanical history of a metal or alloy. An experienced Metallographer
will be able to glean information on all these aspects from observation of the
Microstructures at suitable magnification and using appropriate etching reagents. In
examining a Microstructure, it will be found convenient to classify the observations in
term of colours, grain size and shape, second phase shape, size and distribution
(including porosity), and segregation effects.

The primary object of metallographic examination is to be revealing the

constituent and structure of metals and alloys by means of the metallurgical
microscope. Important uses of metallographic specimen:

1. Many metallographic specimens are used for process control.

2. Examination of defects that appears in finished or partly finished products.
3. Study of parts that have failed in service.
4. Check the inclusion level.
5. To check the size, shape and distribution of various phases

This important for industry because they can detect the limit of the material before it
damaged and broke down. In real world, they can improve their safety and awareness
for that material that used.

6
6.0 THEORY

The Study of microstructure in material engineers is to observe the materials

microstructure using the microscope using different magnified. This experiment is to
identify the microstructure of metallic material properties that can be affected to
tensile, fatigue, creep, fracture toughness, impact properties.

Many important macroscopic properties of metallic materials are highly sensitive to

the microstructure. Critical mechanical properties, like tensile strength or elongation,
as well as other thermal or electrical properties, are directly related to the
microstructure. The understanding of the relationship between the microstructure and
macroscopic properties plays a key role in the development and manufacture of
materials and is the aim of metallography.

 Type of microstructure.

Type of microstructure Description

1)Ferrite 1) Used for iron-carbon alloys, in
which the iron was in the body-
centred cubic (alpha- or delta-
iron) morphology but is now used
for the constituent in iron alloys,

1. The machinery tools and solid mild steel have been prepared before starting
the experiment.
2. Before the do the observation of the microstructure of mild steel metal, the
cutting process was performed because its original size is to big that need to be

9
cutted. Then, the solid mild steel metal mounted in the cutting machine and be
clamped to make sure it doesn’t move while cutting process. During the
cutting process, the process performed slowly to make the cutter blade lifetime
become longer and also to get a quality product of specimen. The cutting fluid
was used during the process to reduce the heat.
3. Next is the mounting process. The specimen was mounted using the automatic
mounting press machine. This mounting process was called hot mounting
process. The specimen placed on the ram, and then the top closure
appropriately sealed. It took about 10 minutes for the solidify the mounted
specimen, and also about 8 minutes for the cooling process. Then the
specimen was removed from the mounting machine.
4. For the grinding process, this process has two parts, which were fine grinding
and rough grinding. The process started with the rough grinding and followed
by the fine grinding. The grinding grit paper was grade 240, 320, 400, 600,
and 1200 grit. The bigger grit, the fine and smooth it will be.
5. For the polishing process, the specimen was polished by using a polishing
wheel machine. This process has four steps by using alumina powder which
was 9.5 micron, 5 micron, 3 micron and 1 micron. The processes started with
the 9.5 micron first and followed by 5, 3 and 1 micron. Before move to the
next micron, the previous one needed to be clean using the plain water.
6. For the etching was to be done before the specimen was examined with the
microscope. In this process, the specimen was etched using the nital 2%
etchant. This process needed 60 seconds to be done.
7. For the last process, the specimen was observed by the microscope with
different magnifications which was X50, X100, X200 and X400.

17
In this experiment, 3 type of metal which is aluminium, cast iron and mild
steel were used. But based on the result obtain, we can see clearly that the material
that been use in this experiment is mild steel. The reason is we can see that
microstructure of mild steel contains ferrite and pearlite. As both ferrite and pearlite
have very poor hardness so we can surely state it is mild steel. For the cast iron metal,
the result not show any fracture form of graphite microstructure and black lead. As for
the aluminium metal, it is not the aluminium microstructure as shown on the result
because grain structure will be reveals after etching process.

From this experiment, we can identify that the specimen that been used in the
experiment is mild steel by observed its properties. Microstucture of mild steel

18
contains ferrite and pearlite. We can surely say that mild steel have very poor
hardness because it contains both ferrite and pearlite. The microstructure of mild steel
is complicated which is influenced by heat treatment, composition, processing and
section seize.

Name : Muhammad Muhaqqiqin Afif Bin Rokman

Student ID : 2019695178

From the result of this experiment, we can see the structure of the mild steel
clearly under an optical microscope. It showed many pearlite and ferrite on the mild

19
steel structure. The view of the structure appeared by followed the various methods
which were cutting, grinding, polishing, etching and examined by optical microscope.
These processes were to identify the structure of the material of mild steel. This
process helps to clarify the structural composition of elements, inclusions or phases in
mild steel. From this experiment also, we can classify the physical properties of a
substance such as strength, toughness, ductility and hardness.

It is important to take care to achieve an effective sample of the specimen.

Before testing the specimen, it is important to follow the above measures carefully as
stated in the introduction. Specific materials need various grading methods and
specific lubricants. When polishing, the polishing process can also depend on the
content. When it comes to etching, the etching chemical solution and the etching
method both rely on the material. The heat needs to be reduced while cutting and
grinding to prevent altering the surface properties. Typically, water is used as a
coolant for cutting and grinding.

Student ID : 2019654184

This experiment is to observer the microstructure of mild steel by magnified

the microscope to see clear image of microstructure. From this observation we can

20
decide what type of microstructure for the mild steel and the properties of the
material. When the magnified the microstructure from 50-500 magnification we can
see the structure from Graphite flake to until we can see ferrite and perlite clearly.
This magnification is very important in order to make sure we can identify the
microstructure correctly even with the other material also.

The microstructure of the mild steel base on the observation is ferrite and
perlite have poor of hardness. Ferrite is a body-cantered cubic (BCC) form of iron, in
which a very small amount (a maximum of 0.02% at 1333°F / 723°C) of carbon is
dissolved. Ferrite gives steel and cast iron their magnetic properties and is the classic
example of a ferromagnetic material. This is also the reason that tool steel becomes
non-magnetic above the hardening temperature. While for pearlite It is a
microstructure which contains both ferrite and cementite. This observation is
important to know the properties of the yield strength and tensile strength for the
steel.

Figure ‘x’

In figure ‘x’, we can see that every material have their own characteristic of
the microstructure. There are 3 material in the figure ‘x’ and we can see the
different for every material. Based on this experiment, the result shown that
material that used in this experiment is mild steel. From its microstructure, we
can see many pearlite and ferrite different with 2 others material where have their
own characteristic. Mild steel have pearlite and ferrite where we an say that this
material have poor hardness.

Based on the experiment, I can conclude that the procedure metallographic sample
preparation can be understand as they instructor explained all of those things before the
experiment begin. Next, basic function of optical microscope and its operation also can be
understand on how to put the specimen, how to use another microscope lens and other. Then,
the analysis from the microstructure’s observation can be obtain as we’ve been though on
how to observe and see the microstructure of the specimen. Last but not least, theoretical
background of sample preparation and metallographic specimens understanding can be
obtained and make use. Therefore, the objective can be accepted.

In this experiment, I can conclude that it is very important to follow the procedure in
according steps in order to get an accurate the result of microstructure of the specimen. Each
of operation in preparation process including cutting, molding, grinding, polishing and
etching must be done with patience. With good sample preparation process, the
microstructure of metal was exposed clearly with graphite flakes, ferrite and pearlite shape.
Based on this experiment, grinding and polishing proved to be the main steps in ensuring
quality of the specimen. The purpose of proper specimen preparation is to know the physical
properties such as hardness, fracture and toughness of the observed metal.

From this experiment, we can conclude that the metallography is one of the most
important part of physical metallurgy that enables us to guess the type of the material and its
physical properties from the microstructure by using an optical microscope. When it comes to
choosing a material for some purpose, it was necessary to choose the right material.
Metallography can help to find the correct material. The success and accuracy of the results
were dependent completely on patience, skills, and techniques

From this experiment, the properties and the microstructure of the material is
important in order to determine the properties of metallic material. The microscope helps us
to see the microstructure clearly and easy to identify the structure of the metallic material.
The preparation before start observing the material is cutting, moulding, grinding, polishing
and etching is the important step how to get a batter look on the microstructure of the
material. In order to prevent from any error, occur during the experiment some safety
precaution taken for example use suitable cutting blade for cutting the steel to prevent the
lifetime of the cutting blade. Next, make sure use cutting fluid when start to cut the specimen
in order to prevent heat at the surface of the specimen.

26
Name : Muhammad Saifuddin Bin Isnin
Student ID : 2019461574

Based on the experiment, I can conclude that metallographic observation can be done
easily by follow the instruction from the lab’s instructor. We need to follow all the command
and highlight the important step to make the result wonderful. In this experiment, we learn all
the process that included such as cutting, molding, grinding, polishing and etching. From all
that process, there are few steps need to follow to avoid the student from any incident and to
make the microstructure in the specimen exposed clearly. Next, we can learn the basic skill to
use microscope, how the microscope operates and how to change the lens. Then, we have
learned how to observe the microstructure in the specimen know the name of the part in
microstructure such as graphite flake, pearlite and etc.
