THEOLOGY 13: SOCIAL TEACHINGS OF THE CHURCH
LESSON 4: THE FAMILY
TIME FRAME: 4th Week
Performance Standard:
The learner shall be able to critically reflect and analyze the importance
of the family and the situations that threaten the family in our country.
Specific Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students shall be able to:
1. explain the importance and role of the family in the society;
2. write a commentary on the existing legislative bills that threatens the Filipino
families.
3. Compose a prayer for the well-being of their family.
OVERVIEW:
In the last module, we discussed the dignity of the human person. This
dignity or worth of the human person originated from the fact that the
person is created in the image and likeness of God, redeemed by Jesus
Christ and became the adopted child of God, and thus is destined to live
in communion with God in eternal happiness.
In this module, we will reflect on the topic of the Family and how God
manifests his love to the union of man and woman bounded in the
sacrament of Holy Matrimony. We will discuss the important role of the
family to every person and to the society.

call as the Holy Family of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.

THE FAMILY IS THE FIRST NATURAL SOCIETY, THE VITAL CELL OF SOCIETY
Let us read the story from the book of Genesis 2: 7,18-25 of the New American
Bible which tells us of the origin of the family.
The LORD God formed man out of the clay of

the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath
of life, and so man became a living being.
The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be
alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the
LORD God formed out of the ground various wild
animals and various birds of the air, and he brought
them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its
name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the
birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none
proved to be the suitable partner for the man.
21) So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and
while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up
its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman
the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her
to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my
bones and flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called 'woman,'
for out of 'her man' this one has been taken." That is why a
man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and
the two of them become one body. The man and his wife
were both naked, yet they felt no shame.
