Unit 2 – Configuring and Formatting a Computer

2.1 Formatting date, time zone, currency and numbers

We use computers to do our work easily and effectively. Computer system has three main
parts. They are,
1. Hardware – Physical components of the computer Eg:- Keyboard, Mouse, Printer…
2. Software – Set of instructions given to the computer to process data
3. Liveware – People who uses the computer
Eg:- Computer programmers, Web designers, Data entry operators…

Software
A set of instructions given to the computer is called as Software.
There are mainly two types of software.
1. Application Software –
Use to perform a specific task such as typing a document, use internet and etc. Eg:-
MS Word, Adobe Photoshop, AutoCad…
2. System Software –
Use to control and manage the computer system. Eg:- Windows 7, Ubuntu, Antivirus

Operating system is one of System software which help us to control and manage the
computer system.

How to Change Country or Region Home Location in Windows 10

1. Open Settings, and click on the ‘Time & language’ icon.

2. Click on ‘Region & language’ on the left side, select a ‘Country or region’ on the right side.

3. Now close the Settings window.

How to Change Date and Time in Settings in Windows 10

1. Open Settings, and click on the ‘Time & language’ icon.

2. Click on ‘Date & Time’ on the left side, select a ‘Time Zone’ on the right side.

3. Click on the ‘Date and Time’ Formats

4. Change date and time

5. Now close the Settings window.

How to Change Currency in Windows 10

1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Change date, time or number formats icon.

2. Click on the Additional Settings button on the Region window

3. Select the Currency tab, type a Currency symbol (ex. Rs.).

4. Click on the ‘Apply’ button and press ‘OK’.

5. Now close the Settings window.

How to Change Number Formatting in Windows 10

1. Open Settings, and click on the ‘Change date, time or number formats’ icon.
2. Click on the ‘Additional Settings’ button on the ‘Region’ window.
3. Select the ‘Numbers’ tab, type a Decimal symbol (ex “.”), do necessary changes and click on
‘Apply’ button and ‘OK’ button.
4. Now close the Settings window.

File Attributes

• File Type, File Name, File extension

• Size of file
• The place file is stored
• Date on which the file was created
• Last modified date
• Rights/ Permission of the file

How to customize File Properties

Hiding a file

1. Open File Explorer.

2. Navigate to the file or folder you want to hide.
3. Right-click the item and click on ‘Properties’.
4. On the ‘General’ tab, under Attributes, check the Hidden option.
5. Click ‘Apply’.
6. If you're hiding a folder with files and subfolders, make sure to select the Apply changes
to this folder, subfolders, and files option.
7. Click ‘Ok’.
8. Click ‘Ok’ to complete the task.

Making hidden files and folders visible again

1. Open File Explorer, click on the ‘View’ tab and make sure to check the Hidden items option.
2. Then browse the hidden items.

3. Type the complete path to the hidden folder or file you want to open and press ‘Enter’.

For example: C:\Users\admin\Desktop\Files\Secret Files\My School.ppt

File Search -
Search by File Extension, Date and Size in Windows

1. Open File Explorer and click in the Search box.

2. Search Tools will appear at the top of the Window which allows the choosing of a Type, a
Size, Date Modified, Other Properties and Advanced search.

3. Alternatively, type the search criteria into the box in the top right of the screen and
press ‘Enter’.
