PLACE
BOLÍVAR-CAUCA
Founded on December 10, 1794 by Domingo Belisario Gómez, it is
located on the western side of the Central Mountain Range, part of the
so-called Colombian Massif
It is 145 km from Popayán, capital of the department and at an
altitude of 1,730 meters above sea level, it has a population (2005)
of 43,461 inhabitants of which approximately 8000 live in the urban
area, has an average temperature of 18.6 ° C and its activities are
agriculture, livestock, mining and commerce.
It is a picturesque and quiet place between the mountains,
surrounded by virgin areas. It is a place where traditions are
followed such as the festival of the virgin of the hill, in which much
people go up to the hill of Bolívar to pray, eat, or just walk. There is
the monument of the Virgin of Mercies and its height allows you to
visualize the region as a whole.
Also popular is the carnival of blacks and whites that takes place
from January 6 to 9, a vibrant and multicultural event, where there
are floats, old years and balloons. The hot air balloon contest
stands out, which gave this beautiful municipality in Guiness
Record for the simultaneous evolution of 3680 balloons, as well as
the world's largest globe.
