Title SIOP Strategies

Grade Level 4th grade

Summary of the Lesson The students learn about the SIOP Model and the effective
strategies that benefit English Language Learners.

Standards: (as applicable) CC.1.5.4.F-​ Add audio recordings and visual displays to
presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of
PA Standards main ideas or themes.

CC.1.5.4.G-​ Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard


English when speaking based on grade 4 level and content.

Essential Questions How can SIOP strategies effectively benefit English Language
Learners?

Objectives Students will be able to:


● Recall effective strategies of the SIOP model.
● Show what they have learned about the SIOP strategies
throughout the use of different activities.

Vocabulary: SIOP Model:​ Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol


Self-regulation:​ the ability to monitor your energy states,
emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in ways that produce positive
results
Mnemonic device:​ a learning technique that aids information
retention or retrieval in the human memory
Zone of Proximal Development:​ what the child can accomplish
alone and what they can accomplish with the assistance of a more
experienced individual
Scaffolding:​ the support given to a student by an instructor
throughout the learning process

Procedure Before Segment:

1. Anticipatory Set: The teachers will display a video that


reviews the SIOP model and explains what the model does.
2. Preview Objectives: Our objectives for this lesson (teacher
points to the board) are: Students will be able to: 1) Recall
effective strategies of the SIOP model; and 2)Show what
they have learned about the SIOP strategies throughout the
use of different activities.

During Segment:

3. The teachers will display a powerpoint to the class that


discusses the SIOP model and the strategies within the
model. The teachers will ask the students to complete a fill
in the blank worksheet that asks questions relating to the
strategies of the SIOP model. Then, the teachers will go
over the answers with the class by calling on students to
give the answer to the worksheet. One teacher will write
the answers to each question on the board so that the
students can both hear the answer and see the answer. Next,
the teachers will ask students to play a Kahoot game that
goes over the information taught in class. After the Kahoot,
the teachers will ask the students to talk with their shoulder
partners about one thing they learned in class that day.

After Segment:

4. Formative Assessment: The teachers will ask students to


talk with their shoulder partners about one thing they
learned that day. Then, the teachers will ask each student to
share one thing that they learned to assure that each student
understood what was taught that day.
5. Closing Statement: Today we learned more about the SIOP
model and the strategies within the model. We learned
about Features 13, 14, and 15 under the topic strategies.
Tomorrow we will discuss more features within SIOP.

Formative Assessment The teachers will ask students to talk with their shoulder partners
about one thing they learned that day. Then, the teachers will ask
each student to share one thing that they learned to assure that each
student understood what was taught that day.
