To the Editor:

Mental health amidst a global pandemic is an important topic to discuss. While some people may
say they are experiencing ‘depression’ when in reality they mean boredom, others are truly
experiencing deep depressive episodes. Depression isn’t the only thing people are struggling
with as they isolate and navigate changes of daily routines and lifestyles. According to the CDC,
this pandemic has resulted in people experiencing anxiety, substance abuse, trauma and stressor
related disorders, and suicidal ideation. The people experiencing these mental health challenges
the most are between the ages of 18-24, racial minorities, unpaid caregivers for adults, and
essential workers. This is a large portion of the population and precautions need to be taken so
more people do not have to suffer. In order to decrease the symptoms of these disorders and
prevent more people from developing mental illnesses, conversations need to be had in the
workplace and in schools so that individuals can receive the support they need. Individuals need
to be able to take care of themselves so that they can survive this stressful time.
