Present

CAN: I can play the piano. (expresses present ability)

Past

COULD: I could run for miles without feeling tired 2 years ago. (expresses past general ability)
WAS/ WERE ABLE TO: Were you able to/ Could you book the tickets for tomorrow? (expresses past ability for a
definite moment in the past)

Future

WILL BE ABLE TO: We will be able to arrive on time if we hurry up.

Countable vs uncountable nouns
Countable nouns: a car – cars

an engine – engines

Uncountable nouns: money, information, advice, luggage, news, weather, furniture, time, people, food (fish, sheep,
meat, milk, water, juice, wine, bread, butter, cake, sugar, salt, pepper, honey etc.), natural phenomena (rain, snow,
lightning), luck, coal etc.

+ QUANTIFIERS:
- A piece/ word of advice - A tube of toothpaste

1 syll: big – bigger than – the biggest

2 syll: - ending in “y” funny- funnier – the funniest

- not ending in “y” crowded – more crowded – the most crowded

3 or more syll: interesting – more interesting – the most interesting

Special cases:

- As + Adj. + as: He is as tall as his brother.


- Not as + Adj + as: He is not as tall as his brother.
- A lot/ much/ far + Adj (in the comparative): She is a lot younger than I expected.
- A little/ a bit/ slightly + Adj (in the comparative): This book is a little more interesting than I thought.
