First grade math – Adding and subtracting lesson plan.

Objectives:
 SWBAT count through numbers one through 20 aloud.
 SWBAT define adding and subtracting in terms of giving and taking
 SWBAT solve addition and subtraction equations within 20
 SWBAT solve word problems
 SWBAT identify aspects of an equation (+,-,=)

State Standard: operations and algebraic thinking 1.OA

Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
 1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in
all positions
 2.Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less
than or equal to 20,
 3. Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition
and subtraction.
 4. Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.
 5. Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem.
 6. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within
10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14);
decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the
relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12,
 7. Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if equations involving
addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations
are true and which are false?
 8. Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating
three whole numbers.

Timeline Brief outline for lesson
 Vocab review (10)
- Adding
- Subtracting
- All of the symbols.
 Animal card practice (15)
- Pass out cards
- Count aloud with the students in the class every student holding a car. (every child)
- Ask the students holding a bird to stand up - count them
- Ask sea animals to stand up.
- Put together the animal groups -adding
- Write the equation on the board. Make sure to highlight the aspects of an equation
- Take away the animals with four legs- subtraction- what do we have left
- Write the equation
- Repeat several times using different animal combinations until all students have had a
chance to stand.
Check for understanding
 Hand out addition and subtraction work sheet
- Have the students do this on their own. After they are done have them do a thumb up,
middle, or thumbs down based on how they are feeling.
