PH 11 – More Acceleration of Gravity

1. A golf ball is released from rest at the top of a tall building. Neglecting air resistance,
calculate the position and velocity of the ball after 2.00 s. (-19.6 m; -19.6 m/s)

2. A stone is thrown from the top of a building with an initial velocity of 20.0 m/s
straight upward, at an initial height of 50.0 m above the ground. The stone just
misses the edge of the roof on its way down. Determine (a) the time needed for the
stone to reach its maximum height, (b) the maximum height, (c) the time needed for
the stone to return to the height from which it was thrown and the velocity of the
stone at that instant; (d) the time needed for the stone to reach the ground, and (e) the
velocity and position of the stone at t = 5.00 s. Neglecting the air resistance. (2.04 s;
20.4 m; 4.08 s; -20.0 m/s; 5.83 s; -29.0 m/s; -22.5 m)

3. A projectile is launched straight up at 60.0 m/s from a height of 80.0 m, at the edge of
a sheer cliff. The projectile falls, just missing the cliff and hitting the ground below.
Find (a) the maximum height of the projectile above the point of firing, (b) the time it
takes to hit the ground at the base of the cliff, and (c) its velocity at impact. (d) the
time for the projectile to be 20 m from the ground. (184 m; 13.5 s; -72.3 m/s)

4. A rock is released from rest at the tip of a 100-m-tall building. How long does the
rock take to fall to the ground, and what is its impact velocity? (4.52 s; -44.3 m/s)

5. A cannonball is shot straight up with an initial speed of 100 m/s. How high does it
go? (510 m)

6. A stone is dropped from rest from the top of a tall building. After 3.00 s of free-fall,
what is the displacement of the stone and what is the velocity of the stone? (-44.1 m;
-29.4 m/s)

7. A football game customarily begins with a coin toss. The referee tosses the coin up
with an initial speed of 6.00 m/s and a starting height of 1 m. In the absence of air
resistance, (a) how high does the coin go above its point of release (b) what is the
total time the coin is in the air before hitting the ground (c) what is its average speed
and velocity? (1.84 m; 1.37s, 3.41 m/s, -0.73 m/s)

8. Standing on a bridge, you throw a stone straight upward. The stone hits a stream,
44.1 m below the point at which you release it, 4.00 s later. (a) What is the velocity
of the stone just after it leases your hand? (b) What is the velocity of the stone just
before it hits the water? (8.60 m/s; -30.6 m/s)
