and 20mm were placed. Total height of kentledge was around 9m
Total Kentledge Load 4200 MT from the ground level. Time and safety were major concerns during

an average of 500MT loading per day using two cranes with round-the-clock operations. Staging was prepared for workmen access and as
the height increased, the kentledge was locked from sides and proper safety nets were provided all around. The test was completed with
zero accidents.

Conclusion

The right blend of meticulous planning, proactive team effort, proper communication, precision of millimetres and rigorous monitoring
led to successful execution of test. The risks were high, and so was the motivation. For an organisation that has adopted a paradigm of
breaking its own records, this achievement is another glory. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our senior management and all the team
members who have been directly or indirectly involved in making history.

 Awareness Session on MyZone - PMS Module
Many interventions are happening around us in the digital platform across all functions. An organisation needs to constantly evaluate and
evolve the way activities are performed. An organization that embraces change improves its competitive edge and succeeds in meeting its
needs.

In October 2018, a new HR ERP platform “My Zone” (a cloud based application developed by Success Factors) was launched in L&T.
October being the period for Mid Term Review in L&T (April to September 2018), Performance Management System was chosen as the first
phase to embrace the new platform, and more HR applications will be brought to MyZone platform in the coming days.

In order to orient staff about the MYZone PMS process, a high level awareness session was held at HQ Chennai on 23 October, 2018 for all
the department heads. The session is also planned for all employees in Geo. During the session, the participants were informed about the
benefit and features of the system, both from perspective of an employee and as role of Manager.

For Individual:

• Sophisticated goals management functionality that enables employees to add new goals and make changes to existing ones.

• Team members can document progress and prioritize work based on performance goals, as well as capture and share performance
achievement and feedback on those achievement with managers.

For Managers:

• Managers can easily track goal status, progress, and probability of success as well as navigate among different goal plans to compare
results.

• Managers can get a complete view into what their teams are working on, set up one-on-one discussions, and provide regular coaching
for employees.

• It was followed by hands on session, wherein the participants logged in to their MyZone login and got a real time experience of the
features and ease of usage.

• The Senior team of participants appreciated the add-on features especially that the system encourages frequent dialogue between
team members and managers.

Workplace heat hazard can cause three kinds of reaction in our Heart
body.
Liver
• Acute reaction - these reactions are not usually permanent.
Example: Soreness of breath or noise. Stomach

• Gradual reaction - these reactions last for a longer time and

get worse based on the exposure over a day, week, month. Small Intestine
Example: Asthma, dermatitis. Large Intestine

• Delayed reaction - these reactions can be noticed only after a

long period caused by long term exposure to a health hazard
evaluated from a work activity or a substance. Example:
Hearing loss, lung cancer.
In this article, we shall understand a few of the occupational health
hazards and their negative impact in our body.
MERCURY
Disease caused by mercury and its components:
Mercury exists in numerous forms: elemental (or metallic) and
inorganic (to which people may be exposed through their
occupation); and organic (e.g., methylmercury, to which people
may be exposed through their diet) affecting the nervous, digestive
and immune systems.
Exposure to mercury
• Factors determining the health effects on exposure to mercury
are:
• Type of mercury concerned;
• Dose of the exposure;
• Age or developmental stage of the person exposed (the fetus
is most susceptible);
• Deteriorates nervous system
• impairs hearing, speed, vision and gait
• Cause skin and muscle movements
• Corrodes skin and mucous member
• Causes chewing and swallowing to become difficult
Health effects of mercury exposure
The inorganic salts of mercury are corrosive to the skin, eyes and
gastrointestinal tract and may perhaps stimulate kidney toxicity if
ingested.
Neurological and behavioral disorders may be observed after
inhalation, ingestion or dermal exposure of different mercury
compounds. Symptoms include tremors, insomnia, memory
loss, neuromuscular effects, headaches and cognitive and motor
dysfunction. Mild, subclinical signs of central nervous system toxicity
can be witnessed in workers exposed to an elemental mercury level
in the air of 20 μg/m3 or more for several years. Renal malfunctions
have been reported, ranging from increased protein in the urine to
kidney failure.
Reducing human exposure
Promoting clean energy, barring the use of mercury in gold mining, ridding the mining of mercury and phasing out non-essential mercury-
containing products are quite a few approaches to thwart adverse health effects.
SULPHUR
Exposure to sulphur in workplace takes place through the inhalation of automobile exhaust, smoke from diesel generators, cranes, rigs and
other equipment.
Diseases caused by Sulphur
Sulphur dioxide is a colorless gas with a strong odor formed when fuel containing sulphur, such as coal and oil, is burned. SO2 is found in:
Air: A common air pollutant observed in most countries, especially insummer smog
Food: Some fruits and vegetables Consequences of exposure to SO2 includes:
Short-term exposure from breathing sulfur dioxide can cause:
• Burning of the nose, throat, and lungs
• Breathing difficulty
• Impairment of respiratory system
Exposure to extreme levels of sulphur dioxide can be lethal.
Long-term exposure to sulfur dioxide can cause:
• Changes in lung function
• Decreased fertility in women and men
• Loss of smell
• Headache and dizziness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Bronchitis and shortness of breath

The month of September had 9 employees celebrating
their birthdays in HQ, and many more in other sites. In HQ,
birthday celebrations were conducted in the presence of
Mr. S. Kanappan, Head and Chief Executive of L&T Geo and at
sites, in the presence of the respective Project Managers.

4 September 2017, as it was the day
I very fondly remember when L&T
visited the campus for placement
process. As ours was the first batch
of Civil Engineering to graduate
from the college, and such a pioneer
was visiting us, there was an aura of
ebullience around.
After 2 days of gruelling sessions
NEERAJ KUMAR pertaining to the selection
GET process, I was the only one
selected from the Civil Engineering discipline from my institute.
There was, thus, an innate sense of regality to be the first placed
student of Civil Engineering, which still lives to this day.
My stint at L&T Geostructure kickstarted with a common
orientation program at HQ where we got a chance to interact
with the Top Management of the company. The experience was
very enriching as we got to know the nuances of business and
what it takes to thrive in such a rich and diverse culture that L&T
is endowed with.
After the common orientation, it was time to get into the waters
of our very own pond. The common orientation was followed by
a 15 days long IC specific orientation program where we were
apprised about different segments and business verticals of L&T
GeoStructure. Various interactive sessions, group exercises and
many other fun-filled activities organized by the HR team not only
helped us to gain an in-depth knowledge about the fundamentals
and dynamics of the business but also helped us to forge strong
bonds with the fellow GETs.
After the Orientation program, I was deputed to MBE-Nabinagar
as my first assignment in Planning Department. It was a more than
fulfilling opportunity for me to partake in the activities related to
Planning, Project Management and Project Monitoring and Control.
The learning was immense which helped me in not only gaining
specific knowledge but also helped me to grow as a person.
After a 2-month deputation in Nabinagar, I was transferred back
to HQ for Stores and SCM orientation. It was again a very fruitful
opportunity as I got to gain an understanding of various processes
related to Store Management, Procurement and Logistics.
I am deputed to Sahibganj as my next assignment in Execution
Department. I look forward to gain immense learning there as well
in the times to come.
All of it would not have been possible without the support of HR
team in particular and L&T GeoStructure in general for which I
am indebted beyond words. I would like to express my gratitude
for providing me with plethora of opportunities to scale up my
potential and to be part of the nation building which L&T stands
for.
