TEST NO.2 DATA.

10/28/2020

PROPOSE OF THE TEST: This test method used to determine the

amount of water required to prepare hydraulic cement past for
testing of: 1) Initial setting time. 2) Final setting time.

 MATERIALS
1. Potable water.
2. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

 APPARATUS
1. Sensitive balance.
2. Graduate cylinder.
3. Vicat apparatus (having plunger 10mm±1mm and 300gm as a
total weight).
4. Vicat mold.
5. Mixing machine.
6. Trowel.
7. Glass plate.
8. Hand covers (plastic gloves)

1
INTRODUCTION
The standard consistency of hydraulic cement Test is
defined as a quantity of water for a specific quantity of
cement which called W/C ratio or consistency which will
permit the vicat plunger to penetrate to a point 5 to 7mm
from the bottom of the vicat mould, We do this test to
determine the W/C ratio which is effects on setting times
and be very important to do some other tests of cement
Such as (soundness test and Setting time, …) and it will
decide how much of water we need to be mixed with
cement .

2
PROCEDURE
1. Wight 650 gm of sample of cement.
2. Take several trials of different W/C ratios, then simply determine
the amount of water required for mixing.
𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟%
× 650 = 𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑙
100
3. Place the bowl in the mixer, place all the mixing water in Add the
cement to the water and allow 30 seconds for the absorption of
the water, Start the mixer and mix at slow speed for 30 seconds.
Stop the mixer for 15 seconds at this time remove paste that may
have collected on the side of the bowl, Start the mixer at medium
speed and mix for 60 seconds
4. With the hands form this paste shape of ball, then throw up the
ball six times from one hand to the other hand, keeping the hands
about (15 cm)
5. pressed into the large end of the Vicat mold. Use the glass to
excess paste at the large end then place the large end at the glass
plate.
6. Use the trowel to excess past at the small end.
7. Center the paste confined in the ring, resting on the plate, under
the rod, the plunger and shall be brought in contact with surface
of the paste and tighten the set screw.
8. Set the movable indicator to the upper zero mark of the scale and
release the rod immediately. 10) The paste shall be of normal
consistency when the rod settles 10 ±1 mm from bottom of mold
in 30 seconds after being released.
9. Draw the relationship between W/C and penetration for all trials.
Construct the best fit line that pass through all points, then at 10
mm penetration, standard consistency of that cement.

DISCUSSION
The cement paste must be properly mixed and placed in the test

specimen within maximum time of 4±1/4 min from the instant when

cement and water were initially brought in contact.

The temperature of the air in the vicinity should be between 20-27 °C.

The temperature of the mixing water should be 23±2 °C. The relative

humidity of the laboratory should not be less than 50%

The result Normal Consistency = 36% c/w, wasn’t satisfied because The

usual range of values being between 22% to 30% percent , The reason

is due to many mistakes) Errors).
