ONE-DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR ON “ROLE OF IPR IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY:

CHALLENGES & ISSUES”

The seminar followed by a paper presentation conference event was conducted on 11th October
2019. The event was organised by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Labour Law, Rajiv
Gandhi National University of Law in collaboration with the Office of the Controller General of
Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Government of India. The knowledge partner of the event was
EBC- SCC Online

Over sixty students and professionals came from across the country for presenting their research
paper. Guests and resources persons were called from outside the university to give their insight
into this theme and marked the presentations.

The seminar consists of a number of sessions in which presentations on various aspects of IPR
has been given by experts and practitioners, followed by a discussion. Seminar papers were
invited from the academicians, practitioners, researchers, scholars and students on the issues
related to the above themes, and the last date to submit the abstract and final paper was 23rd
September and 7th October, respectively. The accommodation facilities for the participants were
also arranged. The sessions helped in developing an understanding in IP laws and the extent to
which it protects inventions and designs. The closing ceremony was marked by a concluding
session, vote of thanks and facilitation ceremony.

After the event, the editorial team was constituted to review and edit the paper. For the name
application was called for editors followed by interviews and orientation sessions. After the
dedication and immense hard work of the editorial team and the professor concerned, the final
draft of the book was prepared that is soon to be published.

NATIONAL SEMINAR AND PAPER PRESENTATION ON “RIGHT TO
INFORMATION: A TOOL FOR TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY”

The event was organised by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Labour Law, Rajiv Gandhi
National University of Law in collaboration with the State Information Commission, Punjab on
3rd March 2018.

The seminar focuses on the objectives of the Right to Information Act, 2005 whose aim is to
provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens to secure access to
information under the control of public authorities. Seminar papers were invited from the
academicians, practitioners, researchers, scholars and students on the issues related to the above
theme, and the last date to submit abstract and final paper was 13th February and 1st March,
respectively. The selected papers by the Committee later got published in a special volume of the
seminar in the form of an edited book with ISBN No.

Forty students and professionals came from across the nation to present their paper in front of
esteemed guests and resource persons. The seminar also had a parallel web conference session
available to selected presenters on the prior notification basis. The seminar was followed by
paper. The accommodation facilities for the participants were also arranged. The closing
ceremony was marked by a concluding session, vote of thanks and facilitation ceremony.

ONE-DAY NATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM ON PROTECTION OF RIGHTS OF
WOMEN: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN INDIA

Centre for Advanced Studies In Labour Welfare, RGNUL in collaboration with National Human
Rights Commission organized a ONE-DAY NATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM ON
PROTECTION OF RIGHTS OF WOMEN: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN INDIA. The
seminar was organized and hosted by Rajiv Gandhi National University Of Law on 28 th
September 2019 from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM IST.
The basic objective of the training session was to promote, encourage and initiate awareness
related to the different issues related to the violation of Women rights, including analysing the
various laws and further relating it with factual reality related with Human Rights Protection and
to provide an introduction to women’s human rights to be specific.
The event started with an inaugural Welcome address by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.)
Paramjit S. Jaswal. Following this the seminar was conducted in four sessions. The esteemed
speakers headed one each of these sessions.
The first session was on Introduction to Human rights of women by Prof. (Dr.) Paramjit S.
Jaswal; The second session was on Sexual harassment of women at workplace and complaints
mechanism by Prof. (Dr.) VC Vivekanadan; The third session was on Right of women and
women empowerment; Nutritional deficiencies among women; Education and employment
ussues by Prof. (Dr.) Nishtha Jaswal and; The fourth session was on Right of women with
special reference to Domestic Violence act by Ms. Jyotika Kalra and Other dignitaries and legal
specialists from the NHRC.
All the speakers focused on the often said and believed thought that the inherent strength of a
society, a culture and a system is judged by the way its women are treated and the role assigned
to them by the society. Gender equality is an important issue of human rights and social justice
not only in India but also in this world as a whole. The indispensability of women as reproducers
of human societies has become an instrument for their enslavement. By putting in their valuable
time and efforts the guests tried bringing about a change in the thought process of the individuals
in regard to the negative notion.
The sessions witnessed a huge gathering of about 240 students and academicians from RGNUL
and other colleges in and around Punjab. All in all the event was a huge success and it was an
extremely knowledgeable experience.

NEWSLETTER

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Labour Welfare, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law
publishes a bi-annual newsletter, "Labour & Liberty". The same covers contemporary issues
pertaining to labour rights. In continuation of the endeavour to promote discussion on pressing
issues facing the labour community as a whole, the centre released its latest Volume V Issue I of
the newsletter in September, 2020.

These issues are a compilation of articles authored by the members of CASLW as well as other
students of RGNUL. The newsletter helps in keeping the RGNUL students and faculty members
updated with the happenings in the realm of Labour law. The newsletter also has a section called
‘News snippets’ which contains updates and latest news concerning the topic of labour law and
welfare and with the relevant links.

INTERNATIONAL ONE-DAY WEBINAR ON HUMAN RIGHTS OF MIGRANT


LABOURERS IN COVID-19: INDIAN SCENARIO

Centre for Advanced Studies in Labour Welfare, RGNUL in collaboration with Centre for
Advanced Studies In Human Rights, RGNUL and Think India, Punjab organized an International
One-Day Webinar on Human Rights of Migrant Labourers in COVID-19: Indian Scenario. The
Webinar was organized on 6th July 2020 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM IST online through the
platform Cisco Webex.
The Key Speakers of the Webinar were-
1. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mohan Peiris, Former Chief Justice, Sri Lanka.
2. Ms. Jyotika Kalra, Member, National Human Rights Commission.
3. Sri CK Saji Narayanan, National President, Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh

The esteemed speakers took out their precious time and conducted such a rewarding session.
During the webinar, they provided their valuable perceptions on the concepts pertaining to the
Human Rights of Migrants Labour, particularly focusing on issues like Migrant Labour and
Dilution of Labour Laws and Migrant Labour post COVID-19: Challenges and Opportunities.
The event started with a brief inaugural address followed by a brief speech given by each speaker
on the various sub-themes of the webinar. The first speaker was Sri C.K Saji Narayan who talked
about issues of labour laws and educational and social strategies required to address the issue.
Next was Ms. Jyotika Kalra who provided views and recommendations and concrete proposals
for action for elimination and prevention of crimes related to laborers and their human rights
violations. The last speaker was Hon’ble Justice Mohan Peiris who raised awareness on the
issues of labour laws and its violation and advocated for developing innovative responses to
prevent violation of the human rights of the laborers. The speakers made sure that no query from
the participants went unanswered. Their valuable insights and expertise made the webinar an
enriching experience.

INTRA-JUDGMENT WRITING COMPETITION, 2020

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Labour Welfare along with RGNUL Moot Court Committee
together organized a Judgment writing competition. Judgment writing is not an ordinary task, the
right interpretation and avoiding vague opinions is of utmost importance in good judgment. The
Judgment Writing Competition, 2020 was conceived with the aim to cultivate the art of writing
judgments among students to push the students to write judgments. The students were given the
feel of assuming the role of the judge. The great strength of this contest was to engage the
students with multi-tasking of both creative lawyering and innovative judging.
The competition was open for all students of RGNUL. A team comprising of two students from
any year was eligible to participate in the competition. The event was held from March- April
where participants were given around a month to write the Judgement based on the problem. The
proposition dealt with a writ petition pertaining to issues of Maternity Leave, particularly dealing
with the issue of granting maternity leave to mothers commissioning a child via surrogacy.
The competition received overwhelming participation from the students of RGNUL, out of
which 3 winners and 1 special mention were decided. The winning teams securing 1st, 2nd and
3rd positions were awarded Cash Prizes along with the Certificate of Excellence. The winner of
Special Mention was awarded a Certificate of Excellence. All the participants were provided
with participation certificates.

CASLW OUTREACH PROGRAM

CASLW through its outreach program aims to include the outside community in order to achieve
the aims and objectives of this centre. Through this program, a constant contact with NGOs in
the area in and around Patiala is maintained.

The outreach program in year 2018 also included legal awareness sessions on Child Labour,
Child Rights and Women Rights for the students of Play Way High School, Patiala.

INTRA-QUIZ COMPETITION-QUIZLEX’18

CASLW conducted an Intra-Quiz for fresher students of RGNUL on 10 th September, 2018. The
quiz was constituted of questions on Indian Polity, and Legal History. The quiz was aimed to be
give the new students an insight into the events at a law school. Winners were honoured with
certificates and books.
