Ordering System:
* Note: When ordering specify as follows:
Example:
CI-Air SG-HS
Means Cooling Industries Supply Grille with Horizontal Face Vanes Single Deflection.
Definitions:
Satisfactory air distribution and flow is one of the major ultimates of an engineer working in the design of
the air conditioning, heating, of ventilation systems of any project.
To assure a proper air flow rate without undesirable noise or drafts, the engineer has to select the right
supply and return air grilles and registers.
Let us first look into some important terms used throughout.
Damper:
A unit when used in conjunction with a grille, will allow for air flow rate regulation.
Register:
Outlet velocity:
The average velocity on the grille surface as measured by ALNOR with tip number 2220 (Measured in FPM).
Total Pressure: Pt = Ps + Pv
The pressure required to move air through a register and is equal to the sum of static pressure and velocity
pressure (measured in inches of water).
The Pressure drop across a grille increases with the increase of grille outlet velocity. To find static
pressure drop; calculate the core area (nominal width - ¾) x (nominal height - ¾) divide the CFM by area to
determine the core Velocity, and apply it to the following formula.
[ ]
2
Total pressure - Corevelocity
4005
The vertical distance between the oulet and the point at which the terminal velocity is measured. Normally
it is designed to be 6 feet above floor level (See fig. Below) The total drop of an air stream is the sum of
drop due to throw and drop due to temperature difference of the air in the room and the air at the grille.
Drop (D) = D (throw) + D (Temperature)
Terminal Velocity:
The point at which the velocity of the air stream drops to 50 FPM.
(50 feet per minute being the maximum velocity that an occupant should be subjected to for long
periods).
Throw:
Definitions:
Long dimension of the grille
ASPECT RATIO =
Short dimension of the grille.
The aspect ratio of a grille has little effect on the distance of throw.
ASHRAE GUIDE dictates that there is less than 14% difference in throw at an aspect ratio of 4.
The figures to the Below show the air patterns for different blade settings, It is noted that the throw and
drop will decrease as the angle of deflection increased.
Other observations can be read from the selection tables on following pages.
These variable deflection settings to satisfy air distribution requirements are obtained by individual
adjustment of the blades.
To obtain long throw and narrow air pattern use 0° to 22° deflection, For shorter throw and wide air
patterns use 45° deflection or more.
Deflection Settings:
In selecting grilles, one is mainly concerned with sound due to outlet velocity and this is why emphasis is
put on proper outlets selection.
The table below gives the outlet velocities recommended for different applications.
Recommended
Application N.C. Level Velometer Velocities
When opposed blades damper is partially closed for balancing purposes, pressure drop and sound are
affected and following correction factors should apply.
NC addition 5 10 15
Fig. 1 Fig. 2
With a 2220A ALNOR Voltmeter jet is positioned as shown in Fig. 1, take readings across the face of the
outlet as indicated by dots in Fig. 2 Use 4 readings for small grilles; 6 for medium size and 8 for large grilles.
Make certain that grille pattern has been set for deflection required as Ak factors are given for 3 Settings.
After determining average jet velocity multiply by Ak factors to determine C.F.M. Volume being delivered.
CFM = V X Ak
V : Velocity fpm
Ak : Effective free Area.

How to use the drop chart. A 32x8” grille is to discharge 700 CFM with a throw of 40 ft, (Note that
this selection complies with the grille vanes set at 0 degrees).
From selection tables read the velocity of 615 FPM (Page 24).
To determine the drop at 15° DT and 20° DT lay a straight line connecting the values of velocity and throw
to intersect the drop line as shown.
As discussed before under Engineering Data, the drop of an air stream below the discharge Grille depends
on the distance of the throw and the difference between the temperature of the air on grille, and the room
temperature.
The drop chart below should be used in conjunction with the performance tables to calculate the drop of
an air stream for given velocity and throw and for either 15° F or 20° F DT.

General :
CIC Floor Grilles & Register ( (F.B.G) & (F.B.R) ) are designed to be installed on floors where air-ducts are
required to be underneath the floor level, such as for computer rooms.
They are designed to withstand 450kg. point load for heavy duty applications.
Description :
F.B.G are multiparallel horizontal or vertical fixed Bars in continuous modular sections. They are available in
fixed pattern of air flow (Zero Deflection) for supplying vertical air flow. Bars are of heavy duty type 6mm
wide, and are equally spaced (1/4") distance.
Mullion bars across the blades provide additional strength and extra reinforcement in the structure of the
grille to withstand loads up to 450kg. Bars are fixed by a standard frame (1.5mm thickness). special type
heavy duty frames with 7mm thickness are also available forming an extra special type of floor grilles.
Both horizontal and vertical bar models can supplied with opposed blade dampers and are called registers

1- The air quantity (CFM) which is given by the air conditioning system design, to be distributed by each
ceiling Diffuser.
2- The sound (NC) level according to the air conditioned space application and the architect demands
(table 1).
3- The ceiling diffuser pattern which depends on the size and shape of the space to be air conditioned,
the layout of air distribution duct work and the type and location of the lighting fixtures or other devices
mounted on the ceiling of that area.
4- The required ceiling diffusers air throw which is determined from the building plan after the ceiling
diffuser location has been decided, then the throw is considered as the distance from center line of
diffuser to the nearest enclosing wall, or to the point of the intersection of its air stream with the air
stream being delivered from another adjacent diffuser.
For high ceiling application, throw may be measured as the horizontal distance described above, plus the
vertical distance from the diffuser location to a point of 1.5 meters above ground level.
In general rule, the throw should not be more than 1.5 times the ceiling height.
The minimum and maximum throw values shown in the diffusers performance tables are based on the
following:
Minimum Throw: is the horizontal distance between the diffuser center line and the point at which the
residual velocity reaches 75 FPM.
Maximum Throw: is the horizontal distance between the diffuser center line and the point at which the
residual velocity is not more than 35 FPM.
In general an average throw can be considered for an application (such as restaurants offices etc.)
Allowing for a residual velocity of 55 FPM.
Sizing Procedure:
After selecting pattern of ceiling diffuser (from page “7”) according to the size and shape of the space to be
air Conditioned, and layout of the air distribution duct work.
1- Check recommended limit of Max. CFM (per each direction) and temperature differential relationship
with mounting Height (table 2).
2- Check the limit of sound (NC) level (table 1) with type of Occupancy and application.
3- Using the performance tables on the following pages, with The total CFM for each diffuser to select the
most suitable size Of diffuser and the best throw which will meet the application, The neck velocity and
the total pressure drop through the Diffuser (which is equal to neck velocity pressure drop plus Static
pressure drop).
4- Use the sound (NC) level curve to check the NC level which should match with the required sound level
as per step 2.

Note:
Selection of all diffusers supplied by the same branch duct should be made at approximately the same neck velocities in order
to facilitate balancing after installation.

· Equalizing Grid
Application :
Equalizing grid for equalization of air flow, directional control and minor adjustments of air flow.
The Equalizing grid is available as an accessory above the diffuser to provide uniform air flow over the
surface of the diffuser face.
The blades are individually adjustable to allow additional control when needed.
The blades spaced on 3/4" centres, help to control the air flow in a linear manner, reducing pressure losses
enabling the over all system to run more efficiently.

· Construtional Details & Dimensions
Perforated Diffusers Engineering and Performance data. The tabulated performance Data includes Area
factor, Throw pattern, Discharge velocity and Sound power level.
Throw T: The throw values given in the tables are related to the perforated diffuser placed
nearer to the ceiling. Two throw values are given for each qv to the corresponding
terminal velocities Vt.
Minimum throw 50 FPM Vt
Maximum Throw 100 FPM Vt
Neck Velocity Vk: The effective discharge velocities given are related to the corresponding effective
free area Ak.
NC Values: Noise data is given in terms of NC levels. These have been derived from sound
power level data ( dB 10-12 watts ) by subtracting 10 dB ( Room effect ) from the
sound power levels.
Neck Size: Outlet sizes are mentioned on the left side of each row within a tolerance of ±10%.

Features:
The air flow rate can be varied without changing the air pattern by the use of the vo ume control damper
attached to the rear side of the diffuser.
The volume control damper consists of two strips of extruded aluminum, one fixed and one movable.
They both have 5/8” x 7/8” rectangular holes on 1-3/4” center.
By offsetting the holes the air flow rate can be redused.

Features:
The High Throw Pattern controller allows air to be directed the Left or right as well as downward when
installed in a ceiling system.
As air is horizontally directed, a surface effect is maintained, even at reduced volumes to provide room air
motion without draft.
Along with its high induction characteristics, make the high Throw an excellent choice for variable volume
Systems.
The CIC Flow Bar linear system is a continuous slot system which allows the air distrubution to become
inconspicuous while fully integrating and complementing the ceiling system and other ceiling
components.
Integral pattern controllers are on standards 24" center, allowing the airstream to be directed left or right
for horizontal and vertical airflow.
The Flow Bar System allows supply, return and exhaust air, all from one diffuser .
Standard finish is flat black for interior surfaces exposed to view and white for exposed flanges. Anodized
finishes and custom colors are available.
Flow Bar Systems satisfy both the architect's and engineer's requirements for designing an air distribution
system that will maintain optimum room air conditions while being inconspicuous to the viewer.
Features:
The Jet Throw Pattern controller allows air to be directed to meet required comfort conditions.
Jet Throw is an excellent choice for high bay application perimeter zones requiring vertical projection, and
for side wall applications requiring extended throw for heating and cooling air, when used in side wall
application where heated air can be directed downward, terminating at the floor at a comfortable velocity.
The CIC Flow Bar linear system is a continuous slot system which allows the air distrubution to become
inconspicuous while fully integrating and complementing the ceiling system and other ceiling
components.
The optional Jet Throw pattern controllers allow the airstream to be jetted in a vertical direction when
installed in a ceiling and hroizontal when installed in a wall, the throw is directed left or right when installed
in a ceiling application, and up or down when installed in a side wall application.
Integral pattern controllers are on standards 22" center, allowing the airstream to be directed left or right
for horizontal and vertical airflow.
Jet Throw pattern controllers can be alternated with the standard high Throw pattern controllers, where
heated air can be directed to the floor while cooled air is directed horizontally across the ceiling, all from
the same Flow Bar.
The Flow Bar System allows supply, return and exhaust air, all from one diffuser .
Standards finish is flat black for interior surfaces exposed to view and white for exposed flanges. Anodized
finishes and custom colors are available.

Features:
A horizontal operatable shutter which operates to equalize the pressure across it.
The frame and blades are constructed of extruded aluminum anodized as standard painted, powder
coated are available on request.
The frame has a typical wall thickness of 1/16” and separated from the movable blades by an extruded
rigid PVC track which is riveted to and becomes an integral part of the frame. A1/8” thick, 3/8” wide foam
tape is installed on the blades where they overlap to insure a good seal and to reduce noise.
Each shutter is carefully designed to equalize the pressure in such areas as a compressor of fan room with
the outside.
The blades are designed and positioned in such a way that if the pressure in the room increase the blades
automatically lift and open relieving the pressure in the room.
When the room pressure is normalized the blades drop to the closed position by gravity.
These devices are also employed at the end of exhaust ducts where they would open when the exhaust
fan was turned on and would close when the fan was turned off.
