CABLE AND WIRES
Application
This cable is suitable for use in dry, humid or wet environments and in open air. This cable is suitable for medium mechanical stress, in workshops and
general industry. It is mostly used on industrial machinery, however is also suitable for use on home tools, electric motors and portable generators. HO7RN-F
cable is highly suitable as a general purpose cable for temporary power supply, but also for use when installing cable in limited space or for use with small
bending radius.
Neoprene (CR) provides many of the attributes of natural rubber in jacketing but it does offer significantly better heat, ozone-corona, weather, chemical, oil
and flame resistance. The mechanical characteristics of Neoprene makes it highly suited to a diverse range of applications including jacketing for all types
of heavy duty and extra-heavy-duty mining cables.
Max continuous operating conductor temperature
in normal use:
+60ºC (in every case of mobile installation)
+85ºC (fixed protected installation)

FR (Flame Retardant) Red Stripe cables are designed to reduce the spread of fire along a
cable tray or duct. However, when these cables burn, they give off large quantities of toxic
gases and smoke. (FYRGARD®) (Common Type)
LHFR (Low Halogen) Blue Stripe cables have specially formulated PVC that reduces the
emission of hydro-chloric acid during burning of the cables. (LOHAL®)
NHLSFR (Non Halogen) White Stripe cables are designed to reduce flame propagation
and smoke in those instances where a fire may develop. By replacing the standard PVC with
XLPE insulation and EVA bedding and outer sheath, no HCI gases will be liberated during the
burning of the cables. (LOTOX®)

ARMADAC®
PVC PVC SWA PVC (FR) Black/Red
1.9/3.3kV d
Cable Description
Electrical and physical properties of 3 core PVC
insulated PVC bedded SWA PVC sheathed 1.9/3.3kV
cables with copper conductors and manufactured to D1 = Diameter over bedding sheath
SANS 1507-3. d = Diameter of armour wire D1
D2 = Diameter over outer sheath D2
Installation Information
The cost effectiveness of transferring power over long distances through intermediate step-up and step-down systems is desirable for the electrification of
industrial and residential installations, including game lodges and agricultural industry applications.
Armadac® consists of 3 circular stranded plain soft copper conductors, PVC insulated, PVC bedded, Steel Wire Armoured, PVC sheathed, 1.9/3.3kV
manufactured to SANS 1507-3. Ideally utilised for the transfer of electricity over long distances.
Advantages of using an intermediate voltage cable over the conventional 400V 3-phase system offered by the increased voltage of 3,3kV include the fact
that volt drop will be considerably lower and small conductor sizes (10mm², 16mm² or 25mm²) will suffice for most applications. The Armadac® cable is steel
wire armoured and provides a robust mechanical protection to the cable, hence it is suitable to be installed underground. Furthermore, Armadac® offers
additional protection against attack by rodents and other animals as provided by the steel wire armouring. The steel wire armouring can also be utilised as
an earth continuity path, therefore eliminating the need for an external earth conductor. Armadac® makes use of circular cores which limits electrical stress
in the insulation and also incorporates a flame retardant PVC Sheath, which limits the spread of fire.

Hard drawn aluminium in H9 temper is used in both ACSR and AAC. High strain steel wire is used in ACSR and this is sometimes protected from
corrosion by an application of grease. Such measures are particularly adopted when the conductor is intended for use in aggressive environments as
encountered in coastal regions.

MV XLPE CABLE
Medium Voltage Electric Cable
6.6kV to 33kV
Properties and applications
Due to the fact that Vultex XLPE insulation is resistant
to high temperatures, it is obvious that higher
temperatures are permissible in the cable.
For XLPE, continuous conductor temperature up to 90°C are permissible, whilst for some hours a temperature of 130°C is permissible. In case of short-circuit
the conductor can withstand considerably higher temperature (up to 250°C).
This important specific characteristic, in contrast with those generally applicable to plastics, give XLPE insulated cables the following advantages:
• Suitable for a sustained conductor temperature of 90°C as a result of which a high current carrying capacity is obtained.
• Suitable up to 125 hours/annum, (no event being longer than 8 hours continuously) at a conductor temperature of 130°C so that emergency loads can
be tolerated.
• No drainage problems.
• Clean handling.
• Relatively low cost per installed kVA.

Paper Armoured (SWA or DSTA) Cable Paper Belted (up to 11kV) Cable
Application
Paper insulated lead covered cables can be used in many electrical distribution and reticulation applications. Special constructions are also
available for use in specialised applications including:
• Electrical distribution in the petrochemical industry.
• Mining - a special construction for shaft installation is available with water blocking as well as flame retardancy.
• Fire and explosion hazardous areas.
• Submarine cables.
• Made to SANS 97.
Technical Services
Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Testing
As electric power cables are manufactured to provide many years of service, it is necessary that the raw materials used are of the highest quality and
conform to the rigid specifications laid down by South African Bureau of Standards. This also means that the production process has to be carefully
controlled, particularly in areas where heating, drying or cooling cycles can be critical to the overall characteristics and electrical properties of the
cable. Chemical, physical and electrical tests are carried out at various stages of manufacture. Final tests are all in accordance with SANS 97. Quality
assurance systems are in compliance with SABS ISO 9000 series.

CABLE AND WIRES
• We supply an extensive range of instrumentation, control and telecommunication cables for the industrial market.
• These cables are used to provide voice and data services including measurement, sensing and control systems through the interconnection of
equipment and instrumentation.
• Control cables are used in industrial power or control circuits for conveying electrical signals to associated equipment and instruments.
• These cables are suitable for installation in cable trays, conduit or trenches as well as other outdoor locations.
• A wide range of solid or stranded copper conductor, insulated with Polyethylene, Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) or PVC in single or multi pair/multi
triad and multicore industrial cables are available.
• These products are designed and manufactured according to specific or international standards.
• Cores are overall screened, whereas pairs can have screened over the laid-up pairs/triads (overall screened), or have screens around each individual
pair or triad in combination with an overall screen (individually+overall screened) in order to minimise cross talk and ground loop interference.
• Aluminium/Polyester foil is used for screening, and Tinned Copper Braid is also available in certain constructions. Various sheathing and armouring
designs are available, and include overall screening and armouring with Aluminium-Polyethylene-Laminate (APL) tape with Polyethylene as an outer
sheath, or Steel Wire Armouring with PVC or Polyethylene as an outer sheath.
• A comprehensive range of sheathing material is available ranging from Polyethylene and PVC to Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) materials and Low Smoke
Zero Halogen (LSZH) options.
• For critical systems and applications a wide range of intrinsically safe industrial cable is available.
For extended & complete range visit www.voltex.co.za. Minimum quantity orders may apply. Dimensions generally shown in mm and subject to technical change. Voltex codes and descriptions have been used above. Use Voltex K8 codes and
