Lesson Plan

Aim:
 Balance and blend in concert D minor
 Musicality throughout mm. 70-89
o phrasing, tuning, dynamics and balance
 Articulation and shape mm. 115-end
o Low brass & percussion focus
Warm-up:
 Concert Bb tuning note
 Concert Bb scale in half notes (repeat top note)
 Concert Bb major chord
o Root - Tuba, Trombone, Baritones, Bari Sax, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
o 3rd – French Horn, Trumpet, Alto, Tenor
o 5th – Clarinet, Flute, Oboe
 Students move up 1 scale degree (Cm chord)
 Students move up 1 more scale degree (Dm chord)
o Work on tuning and balance (pyramid shape)

American Folk Fantasy:


mm. 70 - All the Pretty Little Horses
 Tune chords
o Mm. 70-73 - Trombones, Baritones, Bass Clarinet, Tuba, Bassoon
o Mm. 74-78 – Clarinet, bass clarinet, (Tuba if no bass clarinet)
 Moving lines
o Mm. 70-73 – 2nd and 3rd trumpets, French Horns
 Melody
o Trumpets @ 70 and Flute/Oboe/Baritone @ 74 (Same time)
 Where to breathe, dynamics, light tonguing (doh)
 Run through

 Run through – Don’t rush!

 Focus on articulation – much like a string bass (Round front, dissipate
quickly)
